Tyre sizes?

Hi all

I have 17's on my Almera at the mo. They have 205/40R17 tyres on at the mo. The thing is the car is a daily driver for me and the sidewalls crash into every bump in the shite roads round here. Also the sidewalls look slightly stretched. Does anyone think I could go 215/40R17 or 205/45R17?

Opinions please chaps and chapesses.

Mick (GTI on here) changed his to the 45 profile on his 17"s and said the ride got a bit better.
I know when I had a set of standard 15" on mine with the coilovers the ride was a lot better with the extra tyre
