upgrade to a gti maybe?

hi guys.

ive had my 1.4Si for nearly a year now and my ncb comes through at the end of the month. Ive found myself a mint condition GTI which i really want to get my hands on, got around 56k on the clock, two women owners from new, FSH phase II in black, absoultly mint and all for under a £1000.

Heres my problem. Ive rang up various insurance compaines and they all seem to think im joking around when i tell them the reg and the car. The cheapest quote ive had back so far has been £2800 fullycomp!

Was just wondering if this seems stupidly high to the rest of you or is it what i can expect to pay as im only 17 going in 18 end of the month.

If you GTI owners or even non gti owners can get back to me letting me know if this is roughly correct or if you are a similar age and are paying far less and can recommend a company please.

cheers guys,
josh.

Insurers will fuck you over senseless because you're 17 and you're insuring something with GTi in the name. You won't get cheaper.

Where is the car for sale?

why would an insurance company lie to you.... premiums are already high for most cars,

my brother was payin £2+ to insure a GTi at 18... I however paid only £1200 ish when I had my first GTi....

stick with the Si for a few years, get some NCB under your belt then upgrade.

or look into trade insurance ;)

i pay a grand all in for all 5 of my cars covered plus any other car i drive.

almera GTi
200sx s13 - off road but still insured
nissan micra k10 2ltr - off road but still insured
vauxhall vectra 1.7 turbo diesel
pug 307 1.9 diesel

oh and i have been banned and license revoked and just dropped to 6 points, had 12 when i took it out

gti on its own would still cost me near £800

someone who my dad works with, i dont think its advertised anywhere just has a for sale bit of paper taped to the rear window. and they said they would knock £500 off cos my dads their boss

so theres no way in hell ill get insured on it then? i was suprised that despite me getting a years ncb that its only dropped by £400 though. is there no one on here with a gti that is around the same sorta age?

you will get insured but only if you want to sell everything you own im afraid :(

like sam said, stay with the si for a while, insurance is such a rip off espically for young drivers as you have very little experience on the road and with a big engined car tis not in your favour.

my letter for renewing my car insurance came through the post today so i have been looking up quotes, just to give you a little idea, im 22, female, and ive declared all mods, thats exhaust, after market alloys, air filter, front grill, and window tints (not all on the car yet btw lol) and my quote from admiral was £578.86, i have 2 years no claims and an sp30.

thats not cheap considering they know i have a company car and up to 5000 miles per year which the quote was for.

if i were you i would look at modding the si, or just keeping it as it is for the moment until you get the experience and no-claims under your belt, insurance is a bloody rip off! arrgrggggg

yeah tell me about it kez lol. For this year i was paying £1900 for my Si!!
the other option someone said to me was to do it as a named driver on my dads policy. theres obvious drawbacks to this though as i wont get another years no claims. any other problems with doing it this way?

i was talking to one of my mates from college who has a gti, he said just buy it now and insure it next year as its a good condition one for a reasonable price. what do you lot reckon to that? god if i wasnt going to Uni in september this would be so much easier lol!

ive got a phase 2 GTi here, i can do a sr20de swap for you, then youll be like freaky fish and joe, ;-)

then your insurance will stay the same lol :-)

how does the insurance stay the same lol, surely id have to tell them ive done an engine swap to the SR20? nice idea though mate, always an option!

and me :D
stu done me an SR20 swap in sept of last year..

i have just renewed my ins including the sr20 swap, coilovers, bodykit, lights ,grill etc...

and my insurance is only £740 fpft...

through sky insurance.. AOC have a 20% discount with them if your a fully paid up member:D

ROB

Alright Rob, so is your car now the same insurance group as the gti? and if you were to have those mods on a gti would it be the same or less?

The thing is my age is holding me back, im only 17 at the moment but by the time my NCB comes through ill be 18. Even then im sure i read on here that i have to be over a certain age for sky to insure me anyways. on my parents insurance its still reaching around £1700.

nothing wrong with waiting mate, get some experience under your belt, and then get something quick, as everyone crash's eventually, i'm sure you would rather have a crash, or at least learn a bit more, with the thought that if you do crash it doesnt matter... than crash the gti.

just wait, save up the money, gain the experience, dont get impatient, and you'll reap the rewards

Buy the GTi, sell it for profit, sell your car and buy a worse GTi, then use the moolah to pay for insurance.

Very good idea.

I am not 17 but cheapest people to quote me were Quinn Direct, so If you have to get a gti they would be worth the call but just make sure to declare everything and get everything in writing etc
