anyone know where the ecu gets its signal for the rev counter? i know the rev counter is getting signal coz when i start the engine it goes straight round to the red and off the clock and as soon as i turn the engine off it goes back to 0. ive heard its the alternater/dizzy plus crank sensor?? sorted me power steering problem, it just needed topping up. and would you beleive tht i checked the oil yesturday and there was just enough to show on the bottom of the dipstick. so have topped it up and am keepin a close eye on it to make sure it aint burning oil. as the bloke i brought it off said it had just had the oil changed (no signs of oil leaks around engine or on the drive). i can only assume i drove from bristol to swindon and around swindon for a couple of days like this.

many thanks
Eddie

the rev counter signal wire
if you look in the drivers side footwell there is a harness that runs from the ecu up behind the centre console
if i remember correctly its a blue wire with orange stripe

the harness that has yellow tape on is the one your after

not sure if ph1 and ph2 are the same

cheers for tht dmsteve,
checked the signal from the ecu and then again at the back of the clock cluster (at the connecter and also at the screw marked "sig" on the back of rev counter) got the same readings and they went up as i rev'd the engine so signal is fine. so sapose im gonna have to replace the rev counter now.
thinking bout tuning the engine now, what would you start with? not sure if i want to decat fo mot purposes.

thanks again
Eddie

just been out to start stripping rear shock from the car due to mot next week and i found this:

i also found surface rust in these places:

and this:

also got to do:

front pads
rear disks
rear shocks (ive seen better roads in 3rd world countries compared to the ones in swindon)
welding inside both rear wheel arches (nothin to bad tho front of wheel arch where it meets the sills)
think it needs the flexi brake lines doing as the calipers stick on the rear (or could be the calipers) + it is throwing out lots of brake dust on the n/s/f and wearing the pads quicker this side and pulls tht side when heavy braking.
also the arse feels a little twitchy entering bends (but putting this down to the shocks, i know one is leaking).
would the rev counter not working correctly fail the mot?
also i know either the power steering pump or rack is leaking. but looking more like the pump as i see alot of fluid on the o/s/r of block.

cars off the road now for a month while i get funds together and find sum1 in the swindon area to lend me a welder or for them to do it for me.

starting to think it wernt such a good buy after all :(

happy chappie this evening. me "stacy 'mera" passed her mot yey, only had advisories for front anti roll bar drop link rubber mountings deteriorated but not excessive movement on both sides plus a slight blow from front of exhuast system. so another years motoring for the old girl..

funds permittin over the next couple of months and i'll look into it! just glad tht ive managed to keep this one from the breakers yard. i wasnt expecting it to pass tbh but well relieved tht it did.

Nice car and cool that it passed the mot, but why is it that when a car gets a new mot people think thats its a years guarantee.. inc me

just looked at the age of this thread and your car is coming up for a new mot lol
