Hi every one i just bought myself an almera sri 1.6 last weekend!
i want to know how do you get the gear nob off? i bought this gear nob for my old car (nissan sunny 2.0 gti) but i couldnt get that nob off either!
do i have to cut it off? please help! lol
thanx Dicky VIP

nah, just get the biggest piece of pipe wrench you can find, then twist counter clockwise like a madman.. and voila.. it should crack once you get it moving.. it's screwed on and glued. just use a lot of violence and you should be able to get it off.

some people used a hacksaw to get it off, i suppose they're the ones without arm muscles :D

some people took the opportunity to cut off a bit of the shift lever also to make it lower (shortshift) while they added the new knob.

The gearknob is one massive chunk of Rubber. Inside the top half of it , theres a screw cap which screws onto the gearstick itself. Now for some uttertly stupid reason (dunno about others) but on mine this screw was glued on so failed to come off by normal means. I ended up cutting it off with a baby hacksaw then using a monkey wrench on the screw cap inside.

Cutting it off is one option (and you might end up doing it anyway) but first try a set of mole grips round the base of the 'knob - it's on a standard anti-clockwise to unscrew thread but their also glued on

i used mole grips & an old rag but the bugger still ended up twisted & wrecked as the glue they put on it wouldnt 'crack'

i think it's unavoidable to not damage the original knob just because it is glued.. but who want's it either way :)

Well theres a fing, if a remembr correctly our tech friend Steve told me to heat it up first with something like a hot hairdryer, and the glue will soften up before ya wrench it off and damage anything ;) worth a try first, I'm going to when a get round to fitting the shortshifter! :D

I used vicegrips, tightened to the point of insanity, even then it's like the gear knob was Excalibur...I had to cut the leather cover thing off the plastic first as it just turned around and made grips slip off.

i had great fun with a hacksaw as i wanted to make mine smaller :D
ten minutes later a nice new ear knob was in place!
