What is the oval shaped openin on the left side of the stereo?

It's between the glovebox and the CD player:

It's the famous "curry-hook" mate.

Pull the hook out and hang the poly-bag handles on it so your take-away doesn't slide about the footwell.

Genius.

Edit: because I'm Scottish when I had my N16 it was a "carry-out hook" but same principle.
 
Thanks for that info, I used to hang a rubbish bag on the gearstick before was really awkward especially when the bag used to fill up & catch on the passenger seat but will be relocated to the curry hook now lol.

Never in a million years would i have guessed that!

I thought it would be for something more high tech but can't complain.

It was so insanely useful, even for small shopping trips, it could handle about a few Tesco bags too. Amazed some people haven't been curious enough to investigate it fully!

Well it's pushed all the way in and will not come out if I push it in (i thought it would be like a click-pen) and there's nothing for me to grab hold of to pull it out!
