which alloy size is best

the bigger the wheel the bigger your top speed will be (assuming you can get it there)

the smaller the wheel the quicker the acceleration.

15's are standard on gti etc, 18's fill the huge arches best and 17's are a happy medium.
All depends what your after :)

Gear Knob: Ive never done this but from what I've read on here, warm it up and use something to grip it like a wrench, its glued on and you might destroy it in the process.

15s for performance wise and 17-18s for looks wise. you shouldnt have much trouble getting your knob off. just wrap a cloth round and turn with a wench. the gti knobs get destroyed because they are leather. tried and tried to get mine of in one piece and was taking ages so i just ripped the f****r off. :D

Depends what you want. Personally speaking the OE GTi wheels with 50 profile tyres look great with coilovers. The only other wheel i`d buy is a Team Dynamics pro race and that would be in a 15"

i'm now thinking of 16s as there in between but i would like black ones though as they go with silver colour of my car does ya know were i could get black 16s to fit..

Must have PCD of 4x100mm and near the correct offset (can't remember it off my head)

if you want speed the i would stick with the standard gti rims, but if u want style then 18's defo fill your arches perfectly, i had 17's first which looked nice but i didnt think they quite filled the arches, so i got my 18's but i have definatly sacrificed a noticeable amout of accelleration

18s for style easily looks the best the almera from the back arch up to the top of the car looks big and makes 18s look like normall sized wheels, depends what you want end of the day its down to ur decisionm the bigger the wheel the more expensive to buy and for the tyre

Got given a slightly tatty set of 17" TD PR1's in black with brand new Pirelli Corsa's (virtually cut slicks) that came off a mates VW cup racer (he'd upgraded, they were taking up space apparently and he owed me a favour). Few scuff marks here and there and the offset is a little out but will be sorted with spacers. As they cost me nothing, I'll be getting them refinished, probably in anthracite/gun metal/bronze.
These 17's with tyres weigh the same as my std 15's so 15" PR1's will weigh feck all.
I thought they wouldn't effect performance but they did. Had a look and they are marginally larger but not by much. Think it's the profile as they are 215/45's, which by all accounts is the same as a low pro 205/40 on an 18" rim. Still, look good though and the car sticks to the road like cat shit to a blanket !

Not bad for free hey ! :D

hi i'm a newbie on these forums ... any way lets get down to the point
i want to put 17s on a 1.4 but ive heard they can slow you down...is this true or would 15s or 16s be better

these are the wheels that i would like

http://www.rochfordtyres.co.uk/prod...cat&strKeywords=&strSearchCriteria=&PT_ID=114

and has any one got any tips on how to get a gear knob off...mine seems to be stuck. please
Ive got some 17" Wolfrace Kendos from that shop, very good service!

my Almera isnt as quick to get to speed and doesnt always have the poke it needs at times but if your just cruising around and not hoping to hit Warp Factor 9 then you'll be ok, though with 17's and lowered 40mm my car is still a bit high :S
