which engine for turbo conversion?

i currently have a 1999 almera gti with sr20 rocker roller engine, bottom end blown!!! do i have this engine repaired or do i buy my mates pulsar(complete car) for conversion? i have heard mixed reports about the rocker roller engine and could really use some advice as to what engine to start from,is the pulsar engine the same head or hydraulic tapetts and cams?, my head is a 2p2 5r and block is 53y,red injectors and low port?

Don't use the GTiR engine, they are shit off boost lol.
Buy a good condition Almera GTi engine, and use the bits off the GTiR engine to turbo the Almera GTi engine, and keep it fairly high compression, that way it'll still drive great off boost..
Check out a member called Simcard, he's recently turbo'd his on stock compression, and made good results.
One thing you'll have to think seriously about is management, choose wisely.
Good luck!

As the almera GTi engine runs off a higher compression, if you boost it they respond well. Even at low boost - half a bar/7psi you'll be seeing 220-250bhp easy. The SR is a strong block with some forged components standard so will take low boost no problem.

Put it this way...there's 7 turbo GTi's on here (afaik) and only two of them run the pulsar engine (Scott B and Th3k3ym4st3r). DaveB, Stu, Keiran, Simcard and Jme_Gti all run the higher compression GTi engine.

As shaggy says - management is the tough choice.

Hey there, welcome to the club.
If I've learnt anything about a turbo project. Is to think ahead, once you made your choices; will the products you choose support you should they go wrong. As the guys have implied engine management is not just a single cost; you have to consider that the aftersales support is readily available.

I'd get researching about what makes your setup; which components are compatible and how much of it you will do and how much you trust a mechanic with.

There are only certain parts of my engine which are GTi...block and crank.

I have custom JE pistons that are low compression, roughly 8:1.

This way I have no problems with high boost and detonation.

But in short, a GTi engine with a GT28RS at 8 psi would be brilliant to drive.

Yeah man but your base was a GTi engine, you didn't start with a pulsar engine I don't think?

Much ££ does your man reckon he could do a "normal" turbo conversion for? Nothing fancy. Turbo, mani, turbo to cat exhaust, intercooler, some relocation of bits (if required) & management?

god i remember when it was in little bandit and every bloody person was like its a pulsar engine init! you used to go mad!

GTi engine with a GT28RS turbo metal VE headgasget and 10psi get yourself some power..
