1.4 or 1.6?

Wrong. Phil's had no ARB..

phils is a GX, mine is a GX and mine has an ARB.

no danger would nissan put an antiroll bar as an option extra cause 90% of the population would respond "a what?"

phil's musta been removed by a previous owner for some unknown reason

christ even a K11 micra has a front AND rear ARB as standard

You're wrong mate, paul (freaky fish) hasn't got one, stu's ga hasn't, and i've seen quite a few in scrappy's without too.

By no stretch of the imagination are the 1.4 or 1.6 fast, they're lively engines but not going to thrill you. As said above, if you haven't driven either you won't know the difference anyway. The only real reason to fork out the extra is for the trim.

um... im stumped then...

but on topic. the 1.6 is torquey, pulls nicely around town.

haven't driven a 1.4 so can't comment on how it compares but i have heard that it can be "lacking" in certain circumstances.

1.6 SRi -insurance is still good if you look around hard enougth - im 19 in july and the car is still got the power and handling that stop me from moving on from a jap hot hatch to a jap 2 litre saloon :D - i guess my next step would be to go to a GTi - but 2bh i would be after "new" rather than upgrade.

98-102 bhp stock- can't complain as most of your mates will probabaly be topping 60 bhp in there pugs 106 quicksilvers corsa sxi's watever that claim to be "sporty" -you will have the upper hand with the almera -you prob won't attract alot of ladies immedietly but they tend to respect you alot more because it shows them you can handle you have a "Bigger" more grown up car without driving like a tool i.e like your mates prob do in their euro hatch lol (talking stereotypically)

Almera N15 -drivers car , no nonsense no stereotype - power when you need it and no cause to be an idiot to impress.

istill get a lot of interest in my car not because of the mods but more so the fact that not many others my age own one -shows your different and people like that these days.
1.4 or 1.6 your on the right track !! :D

Pug 1.1 = 60BHp, Quicksilver 75bhp, XSi 100Bhp, Gti 120Bhp bout 2/3rds the weight of an almera as well, the mera has no chance!

There's a reason why pugs are popular hot hatches and the almera isn't....

Although having said that the Almera will be far more relaible, untill it rusts away into oblivion.

your wrong... a 1.6 almera WILL eat a 1.1 and a 1.4 pug or saxomophone

dude i have got 47mpg ! from my 1.4 equation,

seriously,
buy a 1.4 3door basic model, buy some cheap gti interior, (interior is well cheap)
buy abd whack in a cheap low mileage 1.6 engine and as they look identical you only need to insure it and pay tax for a 1.4 ;)
throw on some gti wheels, gti ARB, 30mm lowering springs and youll have a nippy good looking ride

:D:D

^ as he said ^

I drive a 1.0 Micra till my car is fixed and I already miss my 1.4 LOL...not to mention the shitty suspension :D And besides if you ever want more power there are lots of possibilities like: SR swaps, turbo, sell it :D
And if 1.4 or 1.6....buy something...you can never tell the difference until you try them both...and also there will still be more powerfull cars than you got so don't bother with power untill ya got the cash for it :)

To be honest, theres only a small difference between the 1.4 and 1.6.
The 1.6 is very marginally quicker, whether its enough to justify the different (more expensive) tax bracket im not so sure.

Id go for a 1.4 if money is an issue. Otherwise take the 1.6.

^ Indeed and that is the issue the tax seems to be quite big hike to what seems a small gain, but from other comments it seems the 1.6 is much more torquey which can make a lot of difference.

Thanks for all the comments and advice, will reply more once i get a bit more time.

if you want lower tax and cheaper insurance get the 1.4 the 1.6 will always be faster mod for mod.. but if you can afford afew mods the 1,4 can really buz get an exhaust manifold first!

I drove tommo's 1.4 in its final state, and it still drove very differently to my standard 1.6. The torque really is that noticeable, and any benefits from modifications will be exponential.

plus that extra bit of power/torque coupled to the much shorter gearbox means that the 1.6 will make it up a very slight inclne on a motorway for example without having to full throttle the 1.4 and drop it down a gear just to keep it at 70mph :)

To reply to some of the posts, insurance quotes i've got is around £1100 for the 1.4 and £1200 for the 1.6 they are from quinndirect, every other insurers are ridiculously high. So not a big difference between the 1.4 and 1.6, but i do have other choices a mk6 civic 1.4 similar qoutes to the almera and 1.5 mazda 323 an dperhaps p11 primera 1.6(but thats too big for my use). The civic is a tempting choice but they are quite pricey and hold there value well, problem with almera's is they seem to rust like hell which is an issue. One question though how much is the tax for the almera 1.6? i thought it was £185 or something, parkers shows it as £190 and rising to £205!

The Almera is still first choice, they are cheap to buy and good cars, modding a 1.4 is out of the question as the insurance premium will be astronomical! The 1.6 still seems attractive cos of the extra grunt which will come in handy when the car is loaded or something, so i'm geraing towards that from the comments i have read on this thread, but the tax seems a lot for a few extra cc's, but the insurance and day to day running cost doesnt seem much of a big difference to the 1.4. *confused*

If anyone knows how much the road tax for the 1.6 please let me know.

Cheers for all the replies.:)

Just looked at my post office receipt. I THINK I paid £104.50 for 6 months.

However, 12 month isn't £209, it's much less, they add extra on for only purchasing 6 months.

"

Current
Road tax pre-2001
Engine size (cc)Annual rate
1549 and under £120
Over 1549 £185

but for these pre 2001 cars ( 1/3/2001)

looks like no change in 2009 .. the £185 will rise to £200 in 2010
but appears the lower £120 will remain that year
