Almera GTi Track Car

Does look good, but no suspension upgrades? Nice cage, but it may just a universal one, so possibly not that expensive. We`ll have to see what it goes for........

Hi all,

I'm new here,
I've just bought the Track car that you were discussing. I've not been to collect it yet. Was just browsing the net looking for info and came across this forum, and then this thread, bit of a coincidence I guess?

I'm only using the car on trackdays. I had an Impreza WRX track car but sadly I blew the engine at Anglesey a couple of months ago. My cousin runs a Primera eGT track car and so I wanted something similar so we would have some fun on the track. This Almera seemed ideal. I hope to change the cams, put coil overs on and lighten it a bit more maybe if I can find a perspex kit for it. I'll probably change the water pump for an electric one too.

Hopefully I can pick your brains as I know very little about these cars (and I suspect my cousin will shut up now that we are in competition!) .

Cheers
Steve

Congrats on the purchase Steve!
With a few tweaks this car will make a good track weapon.
If you want to save weight, sell me the cage lol :)
Check member on here Rowdy-GTi's car out for inspiration also.

Well done Steve - for £920 it looks like you've got a good starting point there. As you said, decent suspension would be the way forward - along with a few performance upgrades. Plenty fun to be had :D

get the beam bent like rowdy did at balance motorsport whilst there get the suspention set to the tarmac specs of the F2 kit car.. BC coilovers with 9KG fronts and 8KG rears.. polly bush the front suspention and get a whitline rear anti roll bar with those track slicks you'll have the best handling almera in the country..

after that id go for a VZR gearbox or a diff for the normal one.. once youve done that you can do power.. get it gripping and going out the corners first :D

Nice purchase should be loads of fun :). Who's your cousin with the eGT out of interest? Are they a member of NPOC?

Welcome along! You definitely arent the first to use a 'mera as a track car, rowdy has the famous trackmera and there is a ford garage near Joe that uses 2 of them as they're so reliable!
Cams are a good start like you say, and coilovers are a great improvement for handling on these cars. I'm guessing it's pretty lightened already too!

Hi again Guys and thank you all for the friendly welcome.

I've been looking at The spec of Rowdys car, mighty impressive. I'm not going to go all out immediately, I did that with the Scooby and then blew the thing up! If I can get 4 or 5 track days a year in it and improve it after each run then I'm happy. I'm new to front wheel drive though so it'll be a learning curve. All previous cars that I've tracked have been RWD with the exception of the Scooby.

My Cousin has replaced his glass on the Primera with perspex but I can't seem to find a kit for the Almera, Do any of you guys know of anywhere? I'll keep you informed of any improvements that I do and of any track days that I'll attend so we can have a coffee. No doubt I'll be checking bacl often to pick your brains as you guys really seem to know your stuff about these cars! Thanks again. Steve
PS GTi Kurt, I'm in St Helens.

Quick on topic Q, a friend of mine had his window smashed on his Rover, he phoned up a window place and they made him up a temporary perspex window for £15. Any reason why you couldn't do this for the track cars?

Hi all,

Just an upate, I picked the car up this afternoon. My Father in law drove it back, he said everything seems fine with it. It's been on SORN since August 09 so This week i'll drop the oil on it and do a mini service. There's loads of dealer history with the car and bags of receipts. It is a genuine "Custom Cage" that is in there as I have the receipt for it. I think it was bought in kit form as some of the welds are a little "scruffy". The control panel that is fitted is steel and would be better in Aluminium so I'll change that. The ignition switch and start button aren't wired up at the moment so it is still starting on the key. It is very very tidy though, I'm quite surprised. Under the bonnet is an as yet unidentified induction cone and a 4 into 2 into 1 stainless manifold. The exhaust is a Sebring.

I'll post more as I find more out. It was late when I brought it home and I then spent ages messing about in the garage trying to make room for it but it wont fit. My bike is 4ft wide!

Cheers
Steve
