almera mk2 speedometer not working

The speedometer on my 1500 mk2 2002 almera does not work or the mileometer. The abs light does not come on.The clock works on the LCD for the mileometer so do the lights on the instrument display. Can anyone please help.

Does the ABS light come on with the ignition?

Checked the fuses? Will be under 'electronic parts' no doubt.

The milometer iis run off the voltage generated by the speedometer. First port of call is the ABS fuse under the bonnet, 30a IIRC.

Sounds like some unscrupulous person has been removing an ABS bulb. I'd swap in a whole new instrument display and see what happens ( if all the fuses are ok ).

Yeah my next suggestion was check if the bulb had been taped over.

IIRC the abs bulb on the N16 is an LED, but i could be wrong!

I have checked the fuses inside the car and under the bonnet with new ones all ok.I have also noticed that the display has been out before and It does not look like a bulb illuminates the ABS as there is no hole for it to fit in.

Fitted new instrument display today still no speedo or abs light comming on with ignition.Would the ABS light stop working because of a faulty sensor ?

Quite the opposite. It's there to inform you of any faults in the ABS system. you could manually test the ABS if you have access to gravel car park. Get up to about 15 or 20 mph and then hit the brakes. You should feel the cadence through the pedal. If all the fuses are ok then check the internal wiring loom for any signs of tampering. I can only imagine why someone would want to disable the speedo/odometer.

It does seem to look like it is a wiring fault as you do feel a judder at harsh braking.I checked the mot history and the mileage has dropped from 3 years ago,but not changed since. It looks like previous owner has tried to fix fault by putting in new display then given up,wiring has been disturbed. It is not a MOT check the speedo working apparently.

Auto electrician has tested wiring says it is ok and can only think of replacing instrument panel.I told him I had already tried this and it did not work.Getting car back today with same fault.
