Any ways to trace a car's history?

Hullo there, last june I bought myself a rather nice 'mera GX, it's a P reg and I've done a few minor things to her (Gearknob, setabelt pads, head unit, uprated components, interior neon, k&n.). Hopwever I'm having a few problems, well not really problems, anomnalies shall we say.

The car is supposed to be a 1.4, but everyone else I know with a 1.4i cannot keep up at all, a friend in a 214Sli (new style) also a 1.4 mpi DOHC who really can drive well can't keep up with her. She tops out at a shade over 120 (going by the speedo) running 175/60 tyres

I bought her without history/manual with 53k on the clock from a local guy who has a little dealership. As said, she was sold as a 1.4, but really doesnt perform like one. it's usually weighed down with the usual junk (rubbish, magazines, girlfriend, traffic cones, old stock stuff I keep in the boot just in case, cleaning kit I never bother to take out)

Is there any chance I could have bought a 1.6? Is there any way I can get a history for her to check? help!

i dunno but hen i added the k&n filter to my 1.4 the response and acceleration seemed alot quicker?!

Doesnt sound like a 1.4, K&N seemed to ruin my performance and tonight i got blown by a 1.2 nova!

how many cold air intakes do you have blowing onto your filter, lance? I've got two on my 'mera.

juts to point out I've never had the troubles of my 'mera stalling with the k&n when I put the clutch down at high speed I read and worried about...

just the one and its positioned slightly further then recommended, i modded the original intake as i dont have the aftermarket 1, im gonna get one soon though and couple it with a bonnet vent/duct in the future.

the 1.4's are iffy... they have good days & bad days. but a Rover... im not suprised you beat it , I beat a mate's 1.6 & mines defo a 1.4.

If you have a snoop around ur engine casing , there should be a mark saying either GA14 or GA16 , the GA16's the 1.6.

Mind if youve got a listed 1.4 & have a 1.6 Engine installed , id get that sorted quickly. Not only is ur insurance void , but its tax evasion

As GYNX just said:
Firstly check that your engine number is the same that is on the V5 form (log book). Just looked at mine and the first 4 letters/numbers of my engine number are 'GA16' which i am guessing signifies that it is the 1.6 in my case. If yours has 14 instead of the 16 then you should have the 1.4 engine otherwise your engine is the 1.6.

had an interesting affair with an old skool bimmer 318 last night, we were absolutely level, nothing between us whatsoever, bumper to bumper next to eachother down the A303.. I'm off outside when I'm properly awake to look for numbers in my engine bay.

Don't think I have a v5 logbook, that's a bad thing isnt it?

the V5 is the thing with your name and the previous keepers name on it. it also has the vin and engine size. get a V62 from the dvla if you havent, they'll send you a new one.

But aside from that, my old 1.4 gave my mates escort XR3i a run for its money (1.6), so they're not exactly slow.

i had a pug 205 1.1, felt nippy, probably because of its ride height and the inside had the metal showing and no plastic round the pillers... felt dangerous.

Can't find anything saying GA in the bay whatsoever. Looks like I'm writing to the DVLA as I don't have a V5!!

Beaten by a 1.1 pug? eek! maybe round corners. I have a 1.1 fester in the garage and it's deffo slower than the 'mera, it's an '83 Mk1 one in beige, almost a chav classic! Bought it as a fun car and it's all stripped out and regularly ragged round the fields we own. The 'mera was my first car so can't properly compare on road to antyhing else, only other cars I've driven were a corolla GTi 16 and a corsa 1.7 DCTi and a 1.0 micra K12 The corolla was of course more rapid, but the corsa seemed a lot more sluggish, and I shaln't mention the micra again. Ever.

Right, had an HPi check done on the car I'm it's 5th owner!

Registered as a 1.4, but it was written off last year apparently before I bought it, then bought back and made spiffing again. ( I was told it'd had a 'minor' shunt in the rear!) but I'm thinking it possibly had new engine at this point? the guy I bought it from is obviously not hugely honest! there's nothing in the bay saying/suggesting engine size I can find, so I'm getting suspiscious about what engine I have, espescially since I trashed a rover 820i last night being driven by a cocky be-baseballcapped t*sser down the A303.

engine

mine is a 1.4 and it tops out at 120 so it could possiby be right engine

definately a 1.6 then, they're faster than you think, i can scare the crap out of a mate in a clio williams in mine.

No offense, but I have a 1.4 Almera and a modded and heavily ICEd Mondeo 2 litre. The 2 litre p*sses on my 1.4 and my bro has had 116 out of the 'mera... it's quick for what it is but the 820i driver was not driving at full chat IMO...

BTW the older 318 is a 1.6, and the car is larger and heavier than yours so it's kind of not surprising...

Try and find the engine number again as you should, if you find it, be able to tell what engine size it is. I remember looking at mine when i was looking at it before i brought it to check everything matched with the records about the car and on the 1.6 it was viewable by lifting the bonnet up (if i remember correctly) though can't remember where it was on the engine printed though. If it has been filed/rubbed off or something then obviously you wont see it.
