on the way to donny yesterday i got 115-120mph, so you do probably have a 1.4 same as mine(although i was slipstreaming a seat cupra r).

Ive got a 1.4 and Im often suprised how fast it is, considering its a 1.4 in quite a big car - I guess its a well designed and built engine!

I have a 1.4 GX 5 Doored Hatch it is ok i use to drive a 1.6 astra in my driving lessons that was good but i dine the almera quite fast for a 1.4 proboly because its a twin cam engine ? I do not know but i know its costing me a fair bit to run it for my first week

Yep, they're good, solid, and powerful lumps - I saw an ad last week for a new 1.4 something or other (didn't take much interest for starters tbh) but the ad was glowing over the car having 74bhp! The Phase 1 1.4 pushes more than that, and the engine design over 10 years old!

The only possible reason I could think for that low power is fuel economy, but my 'Mera runs at 35mpg+ when not pushed...

I think its running a bit rich and a full tank done me 245 miles but then again i am pushing it lol and its all town driving

245 is probably right for gunning it around town! ive got a shot of snooper s4, and my speed at 90 was actually 85 on the snooper, so these 120mph figures for a 1.4 may only be realistically 110.

yeah as ive heard the speedo is always slightly higher than your actual speed...

Reet, me and a mate (to make sure I'm not being a blind tosser) had a good look round the bay yesterday. No engine numbers to be found whatsoever. Apparently my car at some point had cat C damage. Could that include a f**ked engine that was replaced by another? Could that have been chosen rather idiotically? Have my original engine number from my HPi and what was originally sat there was a GA14.

However, whilst I was poking about in the bay (please don't kill me for this!!) I decided I'd check my oil seeing as it's been a while... it's disgustingly black. Oil change today methinks, think I'll make it after job interview.

On the subject of speedos, I used to know a guy with a frontera which read 70mph when it was actually doing 50, Shows how great vauxhall's quality control can be. At least he'd never get done for speeding.

Lol thats a good point Vaxuall and quality control i drove the 1.0 Corsa 3 Doored Hatch o3 plate and its nasty can not stand it at all comparied to the almera

I had a look at my engine bacy for my Engine number and i found it. altho it was rusting i could not read it off you would have to clean it if you wanted to read it.

I hope it is a 1.6, thats a nice suprise for you! Dunno if its good or bad, but if no-one can see a difference then it might be a cheaky way to cheaper insurance, as long as no-one can find out. If your still gunning it around and beating cars you think you shouldnt, and the car needs an oil change, it might be a 1.6 after all.

Yeah my Nova was a good 15 mph out. Oddly though my Rover was as near as damnit 100%, according to the GPS thingy of my mates we compared it against anyway. Same with the revcounter...

my mate borrowed it on his j reg astra yesterday and was a bit upset that when his speedo read 30mph, he was only doing 19mph! haha

Oh Dear

Me thiks u have a few major issues with your car. (and need a quite word with the geeza you got it from) I have just got a 1.4 si. this thing at standard isn't really that bad (matches my mates tuned starlet SR) but i used to drive a 2.0 v6 fto and not being funny mate you shouldn't really be even seeing the side of a 2.0 you should only ever see the back end. I would be concerned witht safety of your motor aswell mate cause who knows what sort of cut 'n' shut job was done. You should be able to take something up with trading standerds against the guy that sold you the car as he should of mentioned it was a previous wright off.

if it was a private sale then trading standards will be able to do nothing...

if it was a cat c write off, id deffo get it checked out by a local garage. On the HPi it should show the company that wrote it off, phone them and if you're lucky they may tell you the circumstances. Then again, they shouldn't.

Maybe you should go and dyno it, if its around 85-90 then its a 1.4, if it around 100 its a 1.6. Only way i can think of maybe finding out if theres no engine number on it.

its deffo a 1.4

i had a 1.4 sunny that used to beat 1.6's all the time and 318's as youve mentioned
i got about 120 out of it
try and do a 0-60 run with a stopwatch you should get around 10-12 seconds
it must say on the block what it is either that or a big mark where its been filed off

right, how accurate are those 'speedcheck' things that show your speed in red numbers? Theres a new one down the road asking for me to pelt it past.

Well... I think they're pretty accurate because there is a 40mph road near me that has got them right by speed cameras, and they couldnt get you on the speed camera if the sign said you werent speeding could they, if you see what I mean....
