awkward gearshift

i find it quite difficult to change into 1st 3rd 5th and reverse sometimes and have just recently fitted a shortshifter and this is still a problem (not that i thought this would sort it but may have helped) has anyone got any suggestions or remedies? thanks in advance :D
 
Hmm, I find this in both my cars .Hard to get into 1st in the GTi unless stationary, which to me made sense, but reverse is hard to select in the SRi, all you have to do is let the clutch out a bit and it goes straight in. Would be interested to know the cause though.
 
it's just when i'm goin through the gears in warp factor five its a little stiff and awkward sometimes and second is kinda the same as first at low speed, my mates civic is like a machine gun through the gears and it's makin me wonder if the gearbox's in the gti are just gash??
 
Could be just age, although Johnygti had trouble with his and it turned out to be the wrong type of gearbox oil.
 
yes that was a bastard i got my clutch done and they put the wrong gear box oil in but i couldnt even get my gears! before i had the clutch put in it was a bit hard to get in first and reverse!! and now with the new clutch its just the same so must be normal, it sort of grinds in reverse somtimes and its very hard to get into first when your moving like slowing down for a junction getting it in to first before you stop is somtimes impossible!! i dont think these cars have the best gear boxes there not bad but not good! mine has a leak now!!!!!!!!!!! what fucking next ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
 
My 2 don`t like going into reverse from start-up, have to put them in any gear first, bring the clutch to the biting point, without moving the car, then put them in reverse.

Must be an Almera quirk.(although, why they didn`t iron it out for the N16 is anyones guess) :confused:
 
Mine won't go into first when its cold unless the car is at a complete standstill, its a lot better when the engine is hot though. Also second gear from first was a bit notchy but had the clutch adjusted which has helped a lot.
 
my clutch needs adjusting slightly also, has like 1cm of "free play" since i fitted an uprated clutch. Dusnt like 2 b driven slowly now lol :P If any1 finds out it is the synchros i could find out if aftermarket parts are available, i presume they will. Personaly dont fix gearboxs but could get people the parts if any1 needed
 
Your not gonna bother putting in aftermarket synchros unless its a highly modified car,just change the gearbox oil,adjust the cable and be happy,sometimes you have to double clutch to get it in reverse,big deal!
 
if its since your shortshifter has been insaled its because you've over tightened the bolt that holds it to the linkiges. i loosened mine off and put some thread lock on the bolt to stop it coming off.
 
it was the same before the shortshifter was fitted and the first thing i did was change the gearbox oil, my last gti did the same thing in reverse but was ok in the rest of the gear's, it did however has 20k less miles on it.
 
1st gear is always a bas***d unless stationary. some sort of protection i presume. stops you putting it into 1st at 80mph or 10mph as mine seems to be the case. bit annoying when your trying to select 1st rolling up to the lights. never had a problem with reverse though.
