Cheers guys, I appreciate the feedback! It took me a whole day to write up, the engine in my avatar at the moment is the same one I’m using in my car. Some good points taken, I may have spent £3k - £4k but I saved £13k - £14k buying something I wouldn’t have any money left to modify with. The VVL kicking in at 2,500rpm is unfortunately something I don’t have a choice with yet until I find the time/money to have the Greddy MSS installed and everybody’s right, if I rag it the petrol goes down real quick (who needs an uprated fuel pump and bigger injectors?), but steady driving and the mpg is better than my old GTi. I’ll give the CTR some credit, it’s not a bad all rounder and a decent car to lose against. As for the gearbox “ported and polished”… I really don’t remember what I was thinking of at the time lol, thanks Dave! DaddyMera you are better off with a GTi to do the VE swap with. One other thing Gynx, the insurance writes it down as a 1.6l with an engine upgrade (don’t ask me why, as I don’t know???) , but it’s quite interesting really as people expect OAPs to be driving 5 door ‘Meras.

P.S. Pictures have been added, please look at the top again!

love it mate couldnt really imagine it so pictures help out a lot :D i want to do it but dont have the money and cant take my car off the road for a week let alone months :O

those 2 connectors there are the solonoids to activate the VVL mate ;)

That's what I thought Big_Al but some apparently think they are CVT connections, others guess they're the cruise control but whatever they are for sure is uncertain at this stage.
What have you done with yours? Are these connections wired to your Greddy MSS or the ECU or even used at all?

Just seen the pics you uploaded that is a very nice mera I Love the colour and now u droped a new engine into it it is nicer then the GTis I think :)

They are the deffinately vvl solonoids and mine are wired straight into the GReddy MMS.

Cheers Darren198712, I have no more plans to change the styling as I think the Almera looks fine as it is... I'm going for the sleeper look so widearches, flip paint, decals and 19" rims aren't my cup of coffee, I'm actually considering downgrading to 17"s
Big_al... How much did it cost you to have the Greddy MSS installed, don't suppose you could do it for me for free ;) ? I have the unit already but no money left for a while :(

WEll done son a credit to the forum! ;) Thats some acheivement to go from a daddy mobile to a monster 2.0l VVL  Just need to get the vvl to talk to the ecu now mate HE HE HE! :P

Nice write-up Michael...

i thorght the VVL engine was on the 1.6 engine not the 2.0 engine

There is the SR16VE and SR20VE.

There are two different SR16VEs, the std one and the N1, also there are two different SR20VEs...the std one (197ps) and the one from the P12 20V or W20V which is 204ps as std.

That's exactly what I wanted, a monster disguised as a daddy mobile.
In time I'll have the Greddy wired in so keep your eyes open! When that's done I'll apply for it to be a sticky somewhere in the tuning section.

Thanks you for telling me i need to do more research :)
Didn't think you need to do anymore research unless I've missed something or you're thinking of replacing a different engine.

wow - looking good there mate! Glad my GTi proved to be of some use it all.
Cheers mate, you're a good sport and a very brave man to allow me to disassemble a 'Mera with nothing wrong with it! I think you made the biggest sacrifice of all!

I'm getting a lot of pm's, questions and e-mails about this conversion.
Any chance of making it a sticky somewhere appropiate and easy to find?

Are you talking about the black Civic?
My track instructor Simon Mason drives for that team :D

Well impressed mate thats a fantastic write up and its not often someone has the time to share all their wealth of information learnt with the rest of the club like that. I think kev shek was the last one to do that in such detail

Big respect to you for doing something completey different and not upgrading from a 4 door

Nice work.

One day you'll have three kids and won't have the bloody time so, well done!
