Hi,

I was working on the car this morning (Almera GTI) and had the centre console out, but left the stereo on, to listen to music. Something must have shorted

I now have no power from the switched (ignition) feed.

The car still starts and all the other electrics are fine.

I have checked all the fuses in the fuse box near my right knee and all the fuses in the fusebox next to the battery which all appear to be fine.

Are there any other fuses? Is there anything else it could be or that I should check?

Cheers

Does the head unit have any fuses on the back of it? Sometimes they're protected under a small cover which can be opened with your fingernail or small screwdriver.

Also, make sure it's earthing properly. Mine stopped working when I changed the head unit and found out that it wasn't earthing. Unlike most cars the N15 has the head unit earth through the cage it sits on, so make sure the unit is sitting in the cage securely and that the cage is in some way connected to the chassis (be it through a mount or a bolt in the dash etc).

Thanks for replies. I have tested the stereo is ok with a lead. I really think I have not got a 12v switched feed any more. (My Road Angel on the same feed is also not working)

also the aerial must be in or it won't work

Umm....what kind of a headunit do you have? I've never had a headunit that couldn't be turned on if the arial wasn't connected.

quick fix

hi if you fancy an easy way out you can run a new live wire in the car from the batt through the bung top left of engine bay.then just ad a switch on the dash. also a fuse for saftyshould only take 15mins

i had the same thing happen in my N16 no aparent reason, i just ran a lead off battery as said above only sh*t thing is your stereo is then permanently on and if you forget to take the front off you end up stuck at work till the damn AA turn up! i.e 11pm last time

Hmmmmmmm Use A Multi Tester and test all the cables and on the head unit and ciggy lighter. and then try grounding the head unit directly to the battery

Test the
Remote
Perminant Live
Ground

tell me the answers to which one is ok and i will come back to you :)

maybe when you had the console out one of the wires came loose that you didnt know bout? also try to earth it to something else? think thats what the aerials for, but maybe try to earth it to one of the screws near the unit, might work? also think someone else mentioned it but see if the fuse in the back of the head units gone, what type of head unit is it??

that instantly tells me that you have wired up your HU incorretly and dangerously...

on all nissans that ive stuck a new HU into (be it my brothers N15P2 almera, a K11 Micra, and 2x P11 primeras) ive always - read *ALWAYS* had to run the earth from the head unit to a ground point. Nissans HU's earth through the chassis and not through a cable.

Your HU is been earthed through the aerial (hence its "requirement" for it to work) or through another cable which is potentialy very dangerous and could cause a fire...

You should be able to use the HU without the aerial connected

When replacing my head unit I noticed that mine was earthed by the aerial too. It was an after market radio/cassette that was in there when I got it and took me a while to realise it was grounding via the aerial. Not thought anymore of it since I put it in as I just thought it must have been like that all the time.

Dont quite get what your saying here.....so if my stereo is earthed through the aerial my car will catch fire??!!.....all the stereos in both my almera`s haven`t worked without the aerial pluged in........so i assume the aerial acts as an earth??....how can you earth to the chassis without using a cable?

there is a *potential* for it to catch fire as the aerial was never designed to carry a high current.

Yes, if there is no other earth, then the aerial acts as an earth, and not a very good/safe one.

Best thing to do is from the back of the HU, I will assume you have a ISO adapter to fit it to the nissan loom. Cut the Earth (usualy the black wire - but check with specific adapter kits) and wire it somewhere that you know is a good earth point. I usualy mount my earths to the point where the OE head unit screws to - if that makes sence?

My Old N15 Was Earthed Via the aerial too i tested the lead to see if there was a earth on the ISO lead but there was not. I eathed it myself any way. (Pioneer DEH-P80MP)

I Know where your coming from you only need this if you have a after market Radio I mean the stanard one should not drain that much power.its always best to have a good earth :)

Am I the only person who's head unit earths through the cage? The car came with the optional Sony install from new and when I replaced this unit with an Alpine it didn't work unless it was in the cage (inface it made a spark when it touched the cage which is how I knew where the earth was). At first I didn't know what was wrong so I checked the fuses, then plugged the Sony back in and nothing happened until I accidentally touched the cage with it.

The aerial had nothing to do with it I know for a fact because when I first fitted the HU I forgot to plug the aerial lead into it.

Maybe it's different between P1 & P2, or Si & GTi.

the OE one earths though the mounting points in the side and not through the aerial

most HUs nowerdays are pumping out nearly 200w+ in total so its still a substantial current draw...

i was told the earth through the aerial because the car was made in japan and fitting a jap stereo wud be pointless as it wouldnt work in uk properly, so hu were fitted when the car arrived in uk and thats why it earths through the aerial. oh both my gti's have earthed through the aerial and both had standard hu when i bought them!
