well im thinking its the timing chain and he moved the cam sensor to make the car start warmed it up to calm the smoke and sold it me

well can not sleep and at 5am in the freezing cold i had top off the engine and im right its the timing chain the tensioner is all the way out
looks like this

so now i have a choice fix it or cut my losses and its a damm big loss

Assuming you test drove it I am surprised it drove well at all, normally once they stretch its not an intermittent fault...

I take your smoke video and i raise you...

On a side note tho, that tensioner looks pretty much at the end of its travel, as a general guide 10mm extension is the end of the chains life, not looking too good mate.

As the other guys have intimated, that tensioner is at the end of its travel and your chain needs changing. I have just done this job and whilst it was quite a job, it has transformed the car. It cost me £135 for the chain kit and this included the crank seal, chain, tensioner, a tube of RTV, crank sprocket, and cam sprockets for a non VVT motor (which I didn't use).

If you do it yourself, take your time and follow the instructions. It can be done in about 4-6 hours straight but I did mine over a few days as it isn't my primary ride. I'm a Pajero diesel man so hadn't done much work on the Almera but it was a really satisfying job to have completed. Had plenty of guidnace from the chaps on this site so if you get stuck or have questions there is help available.

You've been shafted but turn that around and change the chain and you'll hopefully have a great runner after that.

Also it might be worth changing the tensioner arm. If it has grooves from the chain rubbing across it for years then by fitting a new one you basically gain extra tension and the tensioner does not need to extend quite as far. Might aswell while its in bits.

CoV, if you mean the "stay" that fits across the the top of the chain then i forgot to say this also came with the kit!! Sorry for the omission. Thanks for the reminder!

Do you mean between the cam sprockets? If so, no. I'm referring to the large curved guide the tensioner acts on. If that does come in the kit, then score!

thanks for all the reply's and info i think ill get the kit and fix it as i have a lot of cash in the car ill get there im sure now i know what the problem is
