hey Chris - yep all going well, so thanks again. quick question... i think you gave me a spare power steering pump in the goodies bag - should I be getting it fitted?

No, its just spare that I, funnily enough, bought off Corbs a few years ago as I thought mine was leaking, turned out it was just a pipe.

Tell us a story?

Heres one about my Dad, if he was on here i'd hate to think what would happen!

I heard a sound outside the house one Sunday evening, sort of a scratching clawing sound.

I assumed that it was our Cat...

Upon opening the back door I looked down to see my 54 year old Father slumped in a steaming pissed, bloody, gibbering stupor on my back step!

I pulled him into the house, as he attempted to stand himself up by climbing up the inside of my fridge my girlfriend turned the kitchen light on...

He was only wearing a tee-shirt...

This is one of the stories that I'll be telling my Sons and Daughters lol.

Dads are the tits.

btw - given I am using the GTi to commute York and back every day with a round trip of 110 miles, and given that the M62/A58/M621 piece is bumper to bumper hell, I am going for a new personal record each day! So far I have managed 44 mpg, which I believe isn't too shabby, given 50% @ 10mph average and 50% motorway/dual. I have to keep it below 3000 rpm to get that fuel efficiency - I even thought I might try a 2500 rev limit and see what the mpg is, but suspect a lorry will eventually bounce into the back of the car. I reward my focus and diligence by seeing how fast it can go when it redlines in 2nd from a standing start if I get the chance - but limit myself to only one such fun moment each day... what a sad obsessive one becomes with age.

interesting - and bearing in mind this experience is only a couple of days old, but... the engine actually doesn't feel settled at around 60mph i.e. approx 2750 rpm - almost as if it's straining, then at 3250/70+ mph it settles back into a comfortable growling which doesn't feel at all as if the engine is under any strain, and which improves as you apply more rpm to the system. Also... at constant accelerator pressure in say 3rd or 4th the speed comes on in layers, so there is a lag phase of about 1 second before it engages at the next level in passing the energy through the wheels, so the physical acceleration also follows this multiple plateau model. It is non-linear, but the lag periods seem to last about the same time - maybe about 3 of these plateaus up to maximum rpm. maybe this is the flywheel? If you floor it, you obviously don't notice them.

There is a torque dip around 3k which is noticeable on all GTi's I believe, I think the JWT's make this more noticeable.
