I think you may be trying the wrong insurance companies. try people like Chris Knott, Sky Insurance, Adrian Flux etc. You may be surprised.

wouldn't say it was crap, its good for bog standard cars.

any performance modes, mods or imports you have to go to a specialist insurer.

go fully comp, witha good insurance company it always seems to work out cheaper then tpft. sounds crazy but iv had loads of differant insurances and that always happens for me, i got a qoute on my 96/97 gti and it was 560 fully comp and im a tad younger then you

1.6 SRi would be the next best. or even the 2.2 Dturbo N16. they have sacks of power and weren't much more expensive for me to insure than my 1.6 was
