Is Nissan really Renault???

There has always been great debate as to whether Nissan has merged with Renault and started to use their parts. Unfortunately at the cost of reliability!!
Nissan dealers don't give much info away, so luckily i spotted this car for sale on ebay, which will satisfy all you conspiracy theorists out there.

Fixed

Check out the steering wheel

Proof then to buy a pre 2003 Nissan - or it's gonna break down

Renault bought thier 40odd% stake in nissan in 1999.

Interestingly, nissan bought about 15% of renault at the same time...

haha  I saw that on ebay a little while ago too. I laughed out loud but didnt fail to see the irony. That is indeed NOT the interior of an Almera. Thank god.

I've been over an N16 and now Stu's N15 and there are so many bits that are similar it's not funny. N16 Almera was released in 2000, so the car had already been designed and finalised by the time Renault got their hands on Nissan. It's cars designed and produced since then that you need to be careful of. So Quashqai, Note etc.

That's mainly what I'm on about. But I remember, whilst taking the front bumper off and other bits, a feeling of familiarity even though I've never been near an N15 before.

Post 2003 2.2 DCi engines apparently have bits and bobs borrowed from Renault. Thank god mine was manufactured just before Renault threw the spanner in the works. Pun intended. Wouldn't dream of buying a Note or Cashcow, although if someone were to give me a 350z...... mmmmmmmmmmm :D

Yeah the gearbox is supposed to be joint Nissan-Renault and perhaps the commonrail system that was added to the DCi is Renault. But I've had no problems with mine :) (I've got a 2.2 DCi by the way ;)).

yup, 370z, GTR, all post Renault partnership ... :P

reanults have been supplying a lot of diesel engines for a long time for nissan, well before they bought into each other, a lot of the engines fitted to N16's are renaults engines too.

^indeed :)

and its been said the the YD is a solid lump, and there's not a huge difference between the Di and DCi, i mean it's the same block for one. part numbers match all over the shop. as for the rest of the car it's all nissan, and the interior controls are Calsonic, nissan's go to place, and in the phase 2 the computer gizmo thing is supplied by Navteq which doesnt supply to Renault acording to their list.

don't worry alfantastic :) there's plenty of evidence to show that the N16 is hugely Nissan, esp. the petrol versions, as they are prob 100% Nissan. If it's diesel it's prob 5% Renault as in engine stuff as noted. :)

ive not had a single problem with the Note to date!

has been a great little car!

good engineering in design also i think!

does exactly what it needs to do - notthing special but then it doesnt try to be!

great little town car

To be fair the only issues Ive known about with 2.2 derv’s in N16’s is the denso fuel systems.
the low pressure pumps breaking up, then swarf down the system to high pressure pump, this then damages the injectors = mega money to put right.

we were authorising alot of work on lease cars a while back. most cases were claimed by nissan warranty as the cars had less than 60k.

I think the Di had the pump as a known problem, but they must have fixed it in the 2003> DCi as it's not in the list of common faults anymore.

EDK, thanks for the reassurance. Just that i've heard lots of horror stories about the X-Trail 2.2 DCi engine / intercooler blowing up. Wonder if they use the same engine block as ours and any other similar parts. Whenever i'm pushing it hard, i'm always expecting the turbo or intercooler to go out in a blaze of glory. Any info?

we dont have cars on lease longer than 4yrs normaly the issue was on the late almera 2.2 DCi's. hence the warranty claims upto 3yrs & 60k. lease vehicle rack up the mileage v quickly compared to reatail. so were kind of a long term test bed on a grand scale. these issue occured last yr 2008, on vehicle circa 2005 spec any older and warranty would be zip.

Which leads me to believe that Renault had more fingers in the DCi pie post 2003 cars.
Mine was built March 2003. When i buy my oil filters from the Nissan dealer, they always ask if mine is a canister or paper type filter. The reason being is that it is right on the changeover point of engine design. Now why would they radically change the oil filtration system? Mmmmmmmmmm. I reckon old paper type filter is purely Nissan and canister is Renault influenced.

Well I can say the

P10 steering boss fits on a N16 so the steering rack may be from a P10 or very similar to a P10
The P11 braking system is very similar if not identical to a N16 (280mm Disc)
The N16 rear calipers I am pretty sure are the same as the P11 but the rear carrier is different so I think to upgrade the rear disc all you need is P11 rear carriers and rear disc for a bigger disc conversion (original N16 is 256mm and the P11 is 278mm if I remember correctly)

apart from that I am sure the power steering and stuff like that will all be similar to the P11 or the N15.
