I never knew superchargers used their own oil, i assumed they were fed like a turbo.
I like the car for the fact it's rare and quite a sleeper. Do they respond well to mods? Strong engine?
yeah in the case of the jap made Ogura charger on this it takes about 60cc of oil in the reservoir for the gears inside the casing.
Strong engine yeah, has its weaknesses like any engine, but overall it will rev to nearly 8500 daily without any drama', and is used in supercharged form in a lotus and is a common swap into MR2's.
As for mods the ECU is not mappable in any way due to the limited run of only 250, so it really only supports Intake / exhaust. headers are available but at nearly $1000 are very rare. there was a company down south that developed a smaller pulley kit for the compressor, but they went bust and the kit was near enough £2000, but came with mapping, FMIC kit and a fixed pulley, as opposed to the OEM clutched pulley. cams are available but not exciting profiles. I felt good gains on the butt dyno with the panel filter alone and I'm quite hopeful to see a good gain with the exhaust as it should allow the supercharger to breathe better due to the engine being able to pump out gases faster.
Things like lightened pulleys are a no-no as un-dampered crank pulleys have a tendency to grenade the oil pump on this engine.
If you really wanted to go balls out, you can buy turbo manifolds cheaply on eBay to take a T3 turbo.
Bit of nerd porn here about the development of the engine :
