N16 Nissan 4 Pots brakes HELP!! Servo

omg! pipe length with braided hoses has nothing to do with pedal feel, our mk1 escort rally car had braided hoses throughout, as in no hard pipes at all! longer pipes just means the system holds more fluid, it makes no difference to pedal travel. imo i'd go find a better mechanic.

Further to this, been looking into it as I've had some intermittent issues. Sometimes you feel a delay before the pads start to bite. Pedal moves a good 10-20mm before anything happens. Spongy and longer pedal travel I can deal with but not this. Very disconcerting as slow speed when you only need a little braking.

I'm rebuilding my calipers anyway so if there is a sticking piston causing this I will remove that possibility.

Found this advice which I may follow:
Make sure all the pistons were fully retracted when you commence bleeding.

My old Rover was terrible for bleeding, would always get air stuck in the ABS. I used to take it to a gravel car park, cycle the ABS 20 times and drive it around for a bit then the air makes its way to a nipple. Can't remember if the 306 is the same, it's been a long time since I did any work on it! there is no means to bleed it iirc.

Always find it takes a good number of bleeds to get it 100% if you've had everything off/open. Persevere and i'm sure you'll be rewarded.

My ex's old Rover had a new rear brake line, new rear calipers, new braided hoses and new front calipers and i couldn't get it to bleed for love nor money, was getting nothing but fluid. Ended up driving it to my dads with a super spongy pedal, cycling the abs loads on gravel, putting it on 4 stands and pumping the hell out of it. Got it close, then got an air bubble about an inch long out of one of the rears. Best brake pedal feel evaire after that.

I was thinking of upgrading the master cylinder but the size we have is the same as the B15 Sentra which uses it with the factory Brembo upgrade, so should be fine. Z32 has a 1" cylinder, and ours is 15/16".

I could upgrade the MC (and well might do now with Sam's suggestion of braided lines to replace the hard pipes between the MC and ABS unit), but I could still have bleeding issues. A local garage I once took my old 1.5 ABS N16 to did a superb job on the bleeding of that car. Best pedal feel I've ever had iirc. Might take it back there after a caliper rebuild and just see if they can sort it. If not, then MC upgrade time.

I did look at pedal ratio. Could be another trick to sort this out.

Actually you're not even talking about that are you Ian? You mean the rod adjustment to the booster thingy?

Its not that you dont get ANY braking for the first few mm's of travel, the brakes are still being applied but they arent fully biting. If you were to wind in the brake pedal/plunger the brakes would be slightly on all the time.

With mine it doesn't feel like that. Even travelling at like 10mph I can push the brakes lightly and NOTHING happens for 10-20mm of travel. Even a light apply of the brakes should have an effect at that speed.

Ok, like I said earlier then it might be the ABS causing that. But if you say there nothing at all then id be looking at the bleeding.

Jack the car up and get the wheels spinning, then press the pedal a few mm's and see if the wheels stop. You'll know if the brakes are being applied at all then.

Thanks mate, think I might have to do that, my pedal hits the floor, & I have to pump it 3x to the floor to make it bite & stop the car. I have bought the Apex hoses & fitted them, but the feel is still the same as the z32 hoses (slightly longer orange ones), which were included with my calipers. System has been bleed a couple of times but response still the same.

I still think you need more bleeding. Yes the MC might be contributing, but even with the stock MC you shouldn't be hitting the floor with the pedal, or have the pump it that much.
