Not quite got an Almera yet

Ello guys

I'm Ross from Sheffield. 20 years old and a Court Clerk for Her Majesty's Courts Service. Sold my Megane Coupe ages ago cos it was a pile of pap and now, after a few months of being car free have found myself in dire need of a new one. Sadly now it's more for practical reasons than pleasure reasons. My band's about to go on tour and need something to cart my stupid sized drum kit around in.

So I found an Almera for sale the other day and may well be interested.

It's a 1995 1.4 GX (like I said, practical reasons) that's done 88k miles. I'm just wondering, from the experience of all of you, what some key things to look for are, when going to have a look around it. I'm a little conscious of the fact that the advert doesn't suggest whether or not it has any service history.

Other than that though, it looks a beast.........
CD Player, Electric Windows (inc sunroof), Central Locking, Alarm, 12 months MOT. And best of all, it's a really gross dark green colour. But like I said, practical reasons....

I'm hoping that with it being Jap, even though it's from the mid 90s and therefore has a disgusting odometer, it'll be really reliable and not cost me a lot to run (other than, of course, the soon to be £300 billion per litre of petrol)

Anyway, lemmie know what yer all think and what any potential problems for me to look out for could be :)

RUST! The number one killer of almeras (I scrapped my old 5-door because of it, and another GTi I had wasnt worth repairing as it had gone through).

Check the sills (Especially towards the rear), arches, inner arches (Lift up the boot carpet), doors, sunroof, roof, edges of the windows, tailgate, under the bonnet, front cross member, rear bumper bracket, and all the wings.

If there isnt much in any of those places then you're onto a winner :)

Ey up. I had an external view a few days ago while the place was closed and other than a rusty tail pipe and some sort of welding job which was finished in black on the offside sill, it seemed fairly rust free, albeit, I didn't have a very detailed look, so it will be worth looking again.

Someone asked how much: It's listed for 595... I'm gonna try barter him down to 500. Oh yes!

For £500 you cant complain like corbs said check the rust and any prevoise crash repairs if any. If they are good should last you a long time,

welcome mate, id definately try and knock him down to £100..just because of the english smelly hanging there, other than that it looks good

Hey matey, I'm from Doncaster so pretty close!

Like people have already said, the only real killer is rust, on the sills and arches is the worst place to look for!

£500 seems like a pretty good price, hope it goes well for you! :)

Where abouts is it?
I'm from Doncaster so not too far from yourself!

I know I thought that. N15 RAB, in fact, would be a fairly decent plate for me with that car.

Plus in years to come I could buy an impreza, and it'd still ring true!

How much are those little spoilers you boys have on the back of your cars? Its amazing how much better they make them look.

Stop it Ross, stop making plans to mod the car you haven't even bought yet!!

Oh also, to my friend in Doncaster: It's in Sheffield... right near Sheffield Wednesday Football Stadium.

Have a look in my N15 OE styling guide in the cosmetics section, theres a guide to the spoilers etc, you can usuall get them for about £20ish second hand.

yeah i was thinking of breakers yard.

I'm fairly sure renaults use 4x104 wheels so i can't swap the steelies for my old really crap reno alloys (merely for the meantime so I don't have steelies). Or am I thinking of Ford at 4x104?

Can't wait to get alloys, a tail pipe cover and a spoiler. Oh and crystal side repeaters....

And maybe some white dials??

just a buy a cheap gti, more and more of them going about these days!

One thinks one should re-read the initial post made by myself that clearly states several times the need for a practical (and reliable) vehicle.

A GTi in this day and age where petrol prices have gone to £1.20 per litre at a supermarket fuel station is by all accounts, not practical.
Lest we forget of course, that the tax costs of a GTi will undoubtedly be much higher than that of a 1.4, and of course, insurance premiums would match this trend.
I mean no offence to anybody on here, as I know none of you and hold no judgement of any of you, but generally, if a cheap car bears the three letters 'G', 'T', and 'i', I would bet my nose with utter confidence that its engine has been screaming louder than my mother on a normal working night, the vast majority of the time, therefore excluding reliability from the Almera GTi suggestion.

You may also have made note of the amount of money I'm offering in exchange for my prospective vehicle, and would perhaps know yourself that an Almera GTi, of any age per se, would not be attainable for such a low price.

This price reflects my desire to have a car in the first place. Unfortunately, it's more of a requirement.

Lastly and again, I wish to cause nobody any offence, but if I were to spend the sort of money it would cost to purchase an Almera GTi as a sports car, I would much rather invest it in something with a little more je nes sais quoi. Particularly as the Almera GTi's performance statistics, as a sports car, are actually less than extensively impressive.

It is for the above reasons that I'm going to stick to the thoughts of buying a 1.4 litre GX (in gross green)

:)

think your going to upset a few people on here, I bought a gti for my son for £420 and its a year newer than the car your looking at, and you cant compare figures its all about driving, i'v driven loads of cars with better performance figures, but i think the gti is one of the best for handeling and acceleration.

Jap engines were born to screem, and still be reliable,

Thought thats what the rev limiter was made for!!!:lol::lol::lol::lol:
