5W30 is too thin for your engine, use 10w30 or 10w40

I went to Nissan and halfords on friday, they both recommended 5w30, too late now i changed it yesterday, its running ok, but still tapping away, and to make matters worse my gearbox seems to be whinnig, might be the bearings :(

if you check the chart in halfords it states 10w40 for the gti.

Yes thats correct but they also have a chart that says their staff are fully trained fitters who know what day of the week it is and did definately not get their mums to dress them this morning.

Steve, what FSM is that from ?? Is that * Not recommended on the 5W-20 and 5W-30 ??

Looking at the 1995 FSM I downloaded recently, it's not on the 5W-30 in it. 5W-30 is even recommended in the P11 FSMs (1999 and 2001). My 1995 owners manual for the P10 (non roller) recommends 7.5W-30 for ambient temps above 20 degrees.

For the record I have a 5W-40 hydrocracked mineral oil in mine at the moment.

The manual you download doesn't have the updated pages in it and there are quite a few for the N15.

I use 10w40 or 10w50 semi

Thanks for all the comments every1. The car is running ok with the 5w30 but still tapping, i think ill do another change and go for the most common suggestion on here 10w40.

so i have wrecked my car using magnatec then?

ok I don't disagree wth all your comments on here but for everyday road use I have never known any problems with magantec, its even used as a replacement for a lot of the vag oils due to cost reasons and the garage local to me who is an independant audi specialist sweras by it esp for the chain driven cam tensioners on the 20v motors. So thats what got me thinking it might be worth a shot on the mera as he uses it so quieten noisy tensioners on audis what can it do on a full chain driven cam engine?
anyhow will try it for a bit and see how it goes but also belive i the school of thought you can put the cheapest nasty oil in the planet in as long as you chage it very regularly.

Who has slated Magnatec then ? What was said 5w/30 is too thin. Castrol do Magnatec is 10w/40 which would be better for our GA & SR engines.
If you do a search you will see this has been covered loads of times before.
The problem with using 5W is the oil is to thin when cold and drains back out of the chain tensioners. The hole was increased in size of the outer part to allow oil to enter it quick to get the tension rite at start up. Also you will fine that you engine will burn it off but not bad enough to see blue smoke.

If you want a rant then :P

Magnatec is good enough but not as good as it's made out to be. Clever marketing makes everyone think it's fantastic.

not fantastic but great when its free aslong as i supply the container lol

Well i use 5w-40 fully syn, is that bad then? I never hear any chain rattle on start up or otherwise. Was recommended by the guys at opie oils.

Yea I'd have if for free :)
I wouldn't pay £26 for it when you can get Fuchs/Motul etc from oilman for about the same. I get 5 litres of hydrocracked Halvoline 5w40 for about £11 iirc.

well i pay about 16 quid for a bottle as i buy it in twin packs so for that money i'm happy with it marketing crap and all!

I'm an engineer to trade and we use a wide variety of oils on everything from generators to 400ton cranes, only real benefit I find from fully synthetic is increased life and range of opertaing peramitors and reduced moisture rentetion, so to combat this we change oil every 3 months as we have stores of mineral as oppossed to buying synthetic. Anyway am getting away from my point here marketing hype or not I have seen the difference gtd magnatec makes to a diesel engine it is quite dramtic when the engine is stripped for overhaul compared to a similar crane that has been run on oem grade oil. We had to prove this to higher management to justify the extra costs of externally sourced oils.

so my faith is magnatec is not entirely blind although i admit this is with industrial grade diesel engines, not an sr20de which i am unfamilar with!
