parcel shelf 6x9s holes

I'm assuming your saying that because the bass from the 6x9's cancels the sub bass out?

although i once read that that low sub frequencies can damage the magnets on 6x9's. don't know wether thats true though.

reason i said not to fit 6x9s with open subs is simple, if you think about it when the sub moves outwards in the boot which is essentially a mostly sealed enclosure the air is forced up towards the 6x9s, the subs are extra driving the 6x9 cones and screwing up the sound. Budget comes into this obviously but if you want good sound quality dont bother with 6x9s.

I have some Alpine Type S's in my parcel shelf (soon to be replaced by Infinity Kappa's) and a Type R sub in an enclosed box in the boot, and they run fine together. I've got the bass on the head unit set to -3 so neither me front components nor the 6x9s play much if any of the bass, and so there's no noticeable screwing up of sound.

Personally I see sense in having the sound set up to surround me in the car, and since the rear speakers are further away they need to be louder. I know that competition systems are all about sound staging and live performance effect etc, but personally I can't be bothered trying to get my system to sound like that (because I know I couldn't do a decent job of it), and I don't want my car to sound like a live stage - I want it to sound like my car (if that makes sense...)

Scuse me if I'm making little sense. I'm having trouble keeping awake right now, cuz I'm down with flu badly.

[edit] Forgot to include this, since that's what the thread is about. I just cut the holes by scoring the main oval with a stanley knife, then scoring an X across it and cutting it out in quarters. Saved making a mess with a jigsaw and burning/melting the carpet with the friction heat.

my subs are in a twin quad ported bandpass box, so the only air movement from the subs is sideways which helps. I could enclose teh 6x9s underneath however i cant be bothered and itll look toss haha

theres a real problem with getting good sound out of a car anyway because of seats that absorb the sound and theres like loads of different angles for the sound waves to get screwed up with. hope that makes sence.

I spent ages getting mine in the right position and equally spaced etc, drew round them and drilled a hole, shoved the jigsaw blade in and turned the speed right down, was well chuffed with how well id done, near perfect ovals!

I found my sub sounded best with the box lying on it's back, rather than standing up facing horizontally out the back. Since the back of the box is angled slightly, when lying down the sub faces up and out towards the rear window, which is how it sounds best for me. In fact the worst angle I've had is was facing sideways across the boot floor.

forgive my ignorance on the subject but dont upward facing speakers, whether in the parcel shelf or not just throw sound at the roof?....u dont have upward facing speaking in a home stereo system??

I have to say that with enough tweaking and such like then 6x9's can sound awesome, my astra was always well recieved with passengers.

Rowdy has an interesting point, some ppl do tilt speakers in parcel shelf's to through more sound forward but to be honest its not really a problem, the roof of the car is normally sloping forward so dare I say it pushes it forward (I have to say I've just made that up :p )

The biggest problems with 6x9's is making sure that your front speakers balence out with your high end stuff. There's nothing worse than being in a car where its LOUD but sooo bassy, with front speakers trying desperately to be heard over the back speakers. I'd deffently suggest tweeters and uprate door speakers before doing 6x9's.

Anyway, I like sound and playing with it getting it to sound right, may have rambeled on about nothing here...

I cna see where you've coming from with the upward facing thing. with a boxed sub in the boot strange things happen and for me I found out the best orientation through trial and error. With the 6x9s, they're more of a compromise in a difficult situation. Naturally a separate speaker and tweeter will sound better alone than a coaxial, but in the back there's not a lot of places you can put the speakers separately, so coaxials save space and time/effort.

With the next set of speakers I've got coming, the tweeters are independantly adjustable so they can be tilted forwards, but I'm going to makeshift some spacers to tilt the back end up slightly to see if it improves the sound. I'm kinda toying with using my old set of OE speakers powered off the head unit and placing them lower down inside the boot to try and give a more all round sound rather than 6" behind your head. Later this year my girlfriend is going away to uni and my 205 will (hopefully) be driveable, so I'll have more weekend time available to play around with things. I've always believed that the best way to learn is through trial and error, because you work out for yourself why things don't work and that sticks in your mind better than being told (although I do tend to ask for a lot of advice, whether I follow it or not :D. I'm just weird).

6x9 are useless. Whats wrong with the standard equipment.
the standerd speakers are not exactly brilliant any way but i just want to replace the front door speakers most of all as my driver side dont work and i have to balance the sound threw the car and i thought that 6x9s are better that those stupid size speakers in the doors now...!?

grrrr I hate 6x9's so friggin' much grrrrr I'd say dont even bother putting them in!! Get a decent sub and amp, poss component set, then theres no need for gash 6x9s!! grr..

ive got the jbl 1000w sub powered by a gto1100w amp, i replaced the original clarion speakers with some more jbl speakers. Im about to put some 6x9's in the shelf sadly ther splx jobbies untill i can afford some decent ones. Are you sayin not to put 6X9's in aswell as havin the sub???? dont want to cut untill i know?? :D

Your saying the bass hits the 6x9's and they face the roof etc. Componants fit just along from them and still catch the base and face the roof so doesn't matter what you've got in my opinion as long as they're set right. I have infinity 6x9's and they're mint!

thought so, im saving for some infinitys might just stick to the jbl's tho cos theyll match the rest:P

Dont bother changing the JBL's to infinity (unless upgrading to kappas) as they are the same speaker! The JBL GTO range 6x9's are the same as the Infinity reference speakers as they are both made by Harman Audio and have the exact same powere output and ratings.

I used to have 6x9 in my old car, whilst it sounded loud and 'bassy' it completely destroyed the sound balance.
You spend all your time in the front seat so it's more sensible to upgrade the front speakers only.

I don't agree with the idea of having my car sound like a live performance. live performance music is less aobut sound, more about atmosphere to me and unless I install sweat, heat and moshpit generators, it's not gonna be worth it. I like being surrounded by the music, so I have the balance set so that it centralises on me in the drivers seat.

I know I'm not going to win any competitions like that, so I've no intention (and never had any) of competing. as long as I'm happy, it's all good :D.
