I'd get some Gunk and spray over the engine after warming it up.. they say to cover your electrics, wait 10-15 mins then wash off with water and perhaps a sponge to leave it shiny!
For the rocker cover id take off (I'd take the bolts off diagonally across then opposite each other... (im sure there is a page that covers this) i would also get a new gasket.) ... id use some sort of de-greaser and cloth, scrub hard, then id use a wire brush and wire wool to finish it off, by this time should be shiny (mine was) then cover all holes up and paint a hoy!
Id put a non hairy cloth over the engine so no bits go down near the cams etc
