Removing Bumpstrips

1600watt heatgun didnt blister any paint. It did however melt my seal when removing badges... wooooops :)

Yeah had big heat gun too just done it today 2000W i think. Took ages (nearly 3 hours) that glue is a pain in the arse but ALL of it is off now :) Though just found out passenger side rear quarter has been respayed so gonna have to use some seriouse t cut to try and blend the lines in from where they didnt remove the bumps strip. Any one else got any tips to try n blend it in?

I found exactly the same thing with mine m8. Passenger side rear quarter had been resprayed and didn't notice it was a slightly different shade of blue to the rest of the car until i took the strip off and it stuck out like a sore thumb,so had to stick them back on until i save sum money to get the quarter painted again (the right colour...lol)

*drags up old thread*

So tommorrow im going to remove my bumpstrips and GTi pillar badges with a hair dryer, then spray the strips blue and stick the GTi badges on the front end of them, to update the styling a bit (noticed lots of modern cars, clio's etc have the engine variant or similar badge stuck here)

my question, how hard is it to get the bumpstrips back on straight? if there's no recess to locate them? i dont wanna look wonky!

and also, will i just be able to use the glue thats left on the strip? or will i need to go and find some silicon/stickaflex or something?

Cheers!
Kelv

would it not be easier to just leave the bumpstrips on the car? be careful when your masking them and i dont think it will cause any problems. if you get any overspray on windows etc then use a clay bar and it should come off but if i was you i would mask the windows etc aswell

would say stickaflex to stick them back on

idea to help get them back on straight, befor you remove them use masking tape at the top and bottom of the bump strip as a guide to where it was if you know what i mean

If you think about it, surely painting them is better since they still do their job but at the same time blend in? I know I prefer them on, seeing as my idiot friends don't look before opening doors :@

we like the masking a line idea! lol

I would leave them on the car but i've no garage or anything and i dont want the bumpstrips to be exposed to the weather while they dry, incase they get loads of cut grass and/or gay little black insect things immortalised in them.

plus i'll need to file a flat area onto the end to mount the GTi badge onto, this sounds do-able then (halford stock stickaflex right?)

Done! all my fingers have gammy blisters on but the definitave way of doing it is!:

pull bumpstrips off with hairdyer on them (the more glue you can keep on the bumpstrip the better). then wrap your finger in a towel (to stop the blisters :( ) and rub the glue off while hairdryring! took me about two hours and my fingers are wrecking, but at least its done!

haha, from you! coulda told me 2 days ago though! im still waiting for my fingers to grow back - wore them down to stumps before you let me in on your little towel secret!

im annoyed, i really want to take mine off but im pretty sure my driver side door has been resprayed as ive taken the esteem stickers off and passenger side is mint but on the driver side i have an embossed esteem outline, tells me the door has been resprayed so i dont know what is behind the rub strip!

i cant see any odd paint colour, shades etc, only place wud be inside but cant really tell as its on teh other side lol

I painted my bumpstrips today. I didnt revove them, theres a small gap where the double sided tape holds it to the body. All i did was slide some masking tape into the gap and then masked the rest off with newspaper.
I would recommend you keep the bumpstrips, even if your not careless when opening doors, other people might be

Heres a pic of mine. Im not even a professional painter and my colours hard to match perfectly and it still turned out good so i would say its pretty easy.
It should match better when i clean and polish the car later as the car hasnt been cleaned in a month and looks rather dull compared to the new bumpstrips

I always wonder about the bumpstrip thing, they're so low down that if someone else opens their door onto your car they'll miss the strip completely and obliterate your door instead?

my door has battle scars from where the bumpstrips didnt help lol

if its easy enough to do with a hair drier and only involves rubbing your fingers into a pulp then i might give it a go and see how it looks :)
