I know in America that maufacturers cannot insist on using their parts for repairs/servicing etc to preserve the warrenty. (eg. using a K&N filtercharger to replace an OEM paper filter is fine).
Anyone know what the rules are here?
I'd love to service my own car (it's out of warrenty and I'll probably drive it until it's ready to be scrapped) but I'd be nervous about doing something dumb like getting water in with the brake fluid.
How easy is it to DIY service for a reasonably competant fiddler (happy to wire a stereo or fit an induction kit but squeamish about mucking about with brakes or other critical bits).
Where could I find out how to do this (short of finding a mechanic to show me?) and does self-service have an effect on insurance if there is an accident?
