Spraying wheels

Right gonna have a go at spraying my wheels,do I need to rub down my alloys first or just apply primer straight to them ( cleaned first ) and how many coats of primer/top coat is best.
Any tips appreciated:)

need to rub em down.

take some sandpaper and give the whole wheel a good rubbing down, flat off the lacquer. it should look matte when your done.

then 1-2 coats of primer

1-2 coats of base colour

a shit load of lacquer. not sure how much you wanna use... but cov painted his, and the brake dust burned into the lacque. so a lot would be a good idea. will also protect agains stone chips

Sand down with 320 grit initially, then 800 grit. 3-4 layers of primer with drying time in between, then 3-4 coats of colour, followed by a couple of coats of laquer.
Initially I was very tentative to do this. thinking I would make a balls of it, but with time and patience its fine. Just make sure to mask off the tyre and the valve properly lol. I was more than happy with my result. Dont get me wrong, it wasnt perfect, but with it only costing me £13 in materials as opposed to the £220 I was quoted for powdercoating, I cant complain.

95% as good as powdercoating + 5% of the cost of powdercoating = win! :)

curved motions always, never start/stop on the alloy itself - its not hard. you taking the tyres off or masking them off around fully? have you got a space heater, if possible between coats stand em up in front of that 10inches away to aid drying and baking. like this

more tips

practice on the spare first tho

Step 1 take them off the car..

Step 2 get the tyres of them..

Step 3 take them to a powder coaters and have it done properly.

sams powder coated balck GTi wheels are stunning and still look as good now as they first did.. painted whel look shit after 3 weeks of brake dust eating into them..

worx makes a good point, and you can get em done for around £30 a wheel

also. another tip if you decide to pain

always paint the back of the wheel first, cause overspray goes everywhere and you dont want it on the face of the alloy after you lay the colour down

I've seen some pretty good jobs with just painted wheels tbh. It just takes patience to do it properly and LOTS AND LOTS of laquer.

Ross is right - do the back first :)

the problem with paint is time.. now i dont have the time to take a wheel off my car de-tyre it paint it with 17 layers of paint l=sanding in between ect ect.. i dont know who has.. but you can get them powder coated stripped and powder coated tyres back on in a day.. and the results will far outlast paint..

It'd take me the best part of two days to change a clutch myself but if I stuck it in a garage it'd be done in 3/4 hours. Same principle.

Painting is more about time and patience in prep work. You can get maybe 90-95% of the finish / quality doing it yourself with only 5-10% of the price. It's well worth trying first.

i bet you would spend £100 on materials and paint doing 4 wheels properly.. £20 more and you can have them powder coated..

i do understand what your saying im the last man to pay for anything! but wheels look so easy to paint but there a ball ache..

^ not really pal, the GTi wheels are very easy to paint. Due to the chunky flat faced design. Multi spokes on the other hand big no no to DIY. Ps ive done it

i used about 200ml of paint doing 1 coat on a GTi alloy. do the math. ian is right here.

painting may seem cheaper. but its really not

only reason ive painted mine is to see if i like it then i will get it powdercoated when my tyres wear out :D can get em done for 25 quid each round the corner from my workplace, great working next to a hugggge industrial area lol Evertime the platers come in with jobs im tempted to give them my rocker cover and 20 quid and ask them to chrome it ha

Anyway deffo powdercoat dude, last for agggggggggggggges. the range of powdercoating colours is crazy now, Perkins automotive do it in glow in the dark, flurescent colours, you name it!

WHAT! 200ml for one coat, you’re meant to do many fine layers of paint over time. To get thru 200ml (very cheap If i might add from halfords etc) id probably do 3 – 4 layers easy lol

DIY cost me honestly £40 and ive done mine twice as the first kolor wasn’t to my liking.

Cheers for all the advice, think I might have a go at the spare and see how I get on,if i looks shit I'll get them powder coated.
Some of the prices people are quoting for powder coating seem really cheap, around my area they after £70 a corner, thats what I paid to have my 17's done about 18 months ago!. They looked shit hot to be fair but funds dont allow that sort of spend at the moment, well not without a DIY attempt first.
