SR16VE and SR20VE

Hi,

Basically, what's the difference in power, torque etc. What's the advantage over the other and how readily available are parts for the engine etc?

Basically had the idea popped in my head from the Members rides thread for the Mk2 so just wondering how much power I could get and how hard are bits to get.

Cheers,
Rob

iirc sr16ve n1's are 197bhp

Not sure on 20ve's mind. Think they have more tourque through-out the rev range due to bigger displacmemt.

Seems to be a few SR20VE's on e-bay over in Japan,America and Canada.Really am quite tempted just to have something different.Plus, should have good power standard. Will need custom engine mounts and bellhousing but shouldn't cost a fortune.

Should be cheaper than a £4000 Pinto with only 127bhp at the wheels.

bear in mind that the RWD SR20 box wont mate up to the VE block without an adapter plate. you would be better off getting a RWD SR20DE(T) block and putting a VE head on it.

i bet it would be lot less hassle building a mighty N/A cosworth motor to go in there

Ye....I will probably getting a custom made bellhousing for a type 9 gearbox is I was to go down the VE route.

N/a Cosworth costs a fortune to build.I mean....a fortune.Talking big bucks!!

Turbo's and 6 cylinder engines aren't allowed on road rallies and any 16V Twin Cam engine put into another car that isnt the same model has to run standard injection.

But if you go DET...then on a stage event you'd have to run with the GRP N's and WRC's!!!!

I dont think the cam switching is going to be helpful, surely it'll just result in breaking traction all of a sudden? They dont/didnt run VTEC in BTCC on the DC5s or EP3s

what you need is a RWD DE easy to get hold of on driftworks.. or you can get a DET and remove the turbo..

then get some sleeves and 90mm bore, 12.5:1 VE pistons and some rods, this will give you a 11-11.5:1, 2.2 RWD engine with a set of JWT S4 or BC stage 3 cams Springs an retainers, youll have a bucket of tourque it will rev to 9K and make more power than a standard VE.. dont forget to put a VE on a RWD engine you will need another grands worth of intake manifold.. $500 worth of ve conversion equipment on top of a VE head and engine.. and it wont make as much tourque as a 2.2 and youll still be on standard internals..

the only thing you'll have to source thats custom is a manifold but youd probly get a Cheap AE86 one that can be modified to work..

plus it would kick the ass of a pinto and be the only one in the uk that iv seen :D

I'm pretty sure Alistair McRae rallied an Escort with a Primera touring car engine in it.I think it's Mark Higgins dad that owns it now.Was told by a friend that used to work in the Higgins rallyschool

But as you were saying. It would be awesome to have something different.Everyone seem to be sticking Honda S2000 engines or Cosworth engines in Escorts right now. So,would be nice to have something different.Plus,Pintos are heavy and cost a fortune to get some big power out of

Well your answer is above lol would make atleast 200BHP and equivalent tourque weighs next to nothing as its all aluminium.. and there are some wicked cam grinds available for the RWD lumps that with some good mapping could push power to wherever you need it.. plus you can get gearkits for the RWD gearbox cheap..

putting a VE head on a RWD DE block is slightly different to a FWD DE. need to plug the VTC hole on the block, then you will need to relocate the VVL solenoids no doubt (mazworx) and clearance for the dizzy or just use a 20V CAS

So if I wanted to use a VE head on a DE block it would be easier to use a FWD DE engine then?

Raceworx's (sorry, don't know your real name) idea seems the best bet at the moment.Out of interest, how much would that engine cost to build roughly.Just out of interest?

Thanks,
Rob

no you still have to use all the converter bits and a FWD block wont fit on a RWD gearbox.. so would be useless in a mk2

your looking at about 2.5-3K for the bits and work to build a 90mm 2.2 SR20 id say.. but as above would last a fair few seassons and would make alot of power without a turbo :D

my names Ian BTW :D
