The price of our cars

Just sumin i feel worthy of bringing up- the value of our cars. I have been trying to sell my car over the last month with not even one phone call on it. I am now keeping it which i am pleased about as i never really wanted it to have to go.

What has come to my attention is the amount of Almera's being given away! I've seen phase 2 GTI's up for £600 now- its too cheap. We've got a good gathering of Almera owners on here, lets work together to keep the value of our cars up. Selling your GTI for £600 isnt doing our club any good in my opinion. People giving these standard GTI's away is knocking down some of the superb modded ones such as Naylor's.

I didnt have a call on mine and it was lowered to £2500 and anyone thats seen my car in the flesh will appreciate that its a give away for that. I think if i rele wanted to sell it i'de av to drop it to 2k and thats a bloody joke. Naylor's at 5k is a bargin and that doesnt seem to be selling either which is an insult to a quallity car like that

Come on guys lets not give these cars away!

At the end of the day jedi, these are getting on for 12 yr old cars. Combine that with the fact cars are the new white disposable good and you've got rock bottom 2nd hand value. I saw a programme on channel 4, think it was called '3 minute wonder'. Basically someone gave a scrapyard their old pug 306 because they were getting a new car, so the bloke knowing full well that most of the cars he gets these days are good runners, put it through the mot and drove it from here to Morocco without a problem. And their lies the problems, the modern motor vehicle is reliable but not always cheap to run with increasing on the road demands. Who wants to spend 100's of pounds keeping their old motor on the road when there are new, comfy, reliable, low emission (low tax), far greater economicly viable vehicles out there for less than £6k.

They don't have a cult following like the VTi, to be able to demand a high price.

Also your car is very 'specific'....im sure that's what keeps people away not the price. I've been PM'd with very good offers on here..And im not even selling never even advertised...but it seems like people will pay a premium for the right car.

I don't worry what I'll ever get back, im not a car salesman nor a penny pincher.

simcard & gti kurt have both hit the nail on the head with there comments, plus i dont think it helps now-a-days with parents & banks throwing money at young people who want to have something new and flashy (like magpie's on wheels) and then insuring it under parents so it costs next to nothing, we all appreciate what are cars are and i think that we must either run them into the ground or accept that they are a dying breed so to speak and people are wanting newer cars

It makes me want to burn mine out.

I cant even seem to sell the good stuff like the interior.

The whole scene has changed. JDM has killed it IMO. People think they now can spend £5.48 and have a mint car. Cheap wheels, dropped exhaust and away we go.

Thats why when you go to jap meets the only nice cars there are those thats been bought that way from importers, and the owners have no clue on what, how and where from anything is. They just drive it and hope it doesnt break.

I think the problem lies not just with the almera GTi but with modified cars in general, as soon as you modify a car it becomes appealing to a specific people, and unappealing to a lot of people, so if you wait for long enough you will find probably find the right buyer, When I had my modded saxo (years ago now) I sold in for £700 over the book value to a 18 year old boyracer, purely because it was exactly what he wanted.

The other problem is that the mods never add as much to the value of your car as you think (as I know all to well), say you spend £1000 on a fab set of alloys, your car is not suddenly worth £1000 more, I think some of the prices people are looking for are just to high compared to other cars on offer not having a go at anyone, just saying £3Kor£5K is a lot of money expecially when you look at what else you can get for the same money.

I also think that a lot of people are put off by modified cars, as they stereotype modded cars as being driven by 'boy racers' who abuse and thrasg they're cars

I think it's better to have them cheap as I think I need more than 4 at the moment.

:D

Yeah, all of a sudden I want a GTI again now, even though I spent shit-lots on running mine, buying one for £1000 or less makes that a lot more acceptable, plus in my experience it was actually really economical...

I am looking for a gti at the mo, I want spend more than £2000 on one and for that I want it to be mint.
I been to see one today its was advertised as mint but, the front bumper was sagging and loose. broken front lense, broken rear light, drivers door slightly bent, rusty front arch and plenty of scapes!
Gutted!!

Finally someone else says it, JDM has ripped the UK modyfying scene apart.

Now all people have to do is be told that a dash switch that some litte Japanese man put on a 'spethal edishun' model is the best thing since a hand job from Jessica Alba, and all the JDM fanbois Y0 crawl over piss soaked glass to get it.

JDM is a fad, a fashion and a fuck up. The lack of desire to experiment with cars and find new parts and be creative with the car has left us with a lazy public and orange indicators.

JAE really opened my eyes to the Japanese car culture in this country, it was 50% filler and fiberglass, %45 JDM ebay bolt ons and 5% ingenuety and bespoke engineering.

Some might be itching to say im contradicting myself and that ive hit the Euro bandwagon, but i havnt. Im not stretching my tyres or losing my doorhandles or getting Porsche brakes, im moving with a scene that openly encourages fabrication, customisation and craves fresh ideas.

Buisnesses are closing down due to the sheer lack of imagination in the modification scene as a whole right now so think before you take the lazy route and click 'Buy Now' .

Agreed, the average Civic fanatic is about as bad as Saxo boyracers were a few years ago. BUT, Porsche brakes, nowt wrong with those, that's an actual performance benefit. ;) I'd fit them to a wheelbarrow if I could, if I had to wheel it downhill anyway.

I think we're reading into this a bit too much, because Ive got some better looking rear lights and orange front indicators to match, does that make me a JDM whore like benskett? I don't think so, i just think it looks good. Some cars like JDM Tegs look amazing left as they are, other cars like 200sx's look stunning with a fat kit on them IMO.
I think people have realised that sticking a huge body kit on your car usually ends up in a poor paint match, cracked a few weeks later and eventually lowers the chances of you selling it. People shouldn't have to spend ££££'s on kits and ice before it becomes 'show spec'. JDM has its place in the car seen, especially for people who like their cars to look like they did when they rolled out of the factory.
To me JDM is another word for Standard looking. I don't see it in a fashion sense like some people do and maybe that's where damo's comments come into play. My favourite 2 kits out of the whole N15 range inc imports are the UKDM ones.

I suppose its interesting to look at how max power has changed, its almost 180'd on the scene it was following a couple of years ago. As its readers have aged its had to adapt. Unfortunately Big cheap power often comes in the form of a Japanese car. Hence why all the college kids i study with want civics, mr2's, skylines, supra's etc etc as they read lax power religiously.

Maybe if we hold out it will change once more and we can be left to love our Jap cars for the right reasons...

Ok, not flaming you but I need to defend some of them comments.

What is the UK modifying scene? I'd class it as flip paint 1.0L Saxo's with a 'Xtreme' bodykit and chrome wheels.....Well Im glad that era has fucked off.

Im not into the car modifying scene to break boundries or get an OBE for my modifying work, so fuck bespoke engineering...Nissan done all that hardwork when they made the GTi/VZR. I'd rather put my time, knowledge and money into advancing the UK SR20DE scene.

And aslong as businesses like 'Carisma' and 'Ultimate Velocity' are the ones shutting down...then im happy. If they can't move with the times then that's there fault.

I can't really comment on the Euro scene...but there no better. Metal plates, OE+ wheels and an Audi TT engine in everything with a VW badge.

I missed this the first time round, Ive always got offers like that over pms etc but to get the dreamers to come with the cash is another problem

Above above about the jdm vs uk scene has been taken out of context imo.

I think what me and damo are saying is people who won't buy anything or are afraid of modifying, granted tegs look great standard, but with a better set of wheels, a small lip kit and some suspension mods they look even better.

Agreed.

I haven't read lax power or the like for ages, but I remember when I last did the above^^ was all that was needed to get your car featured. If was as if a simple formula could be followed to get your car featured:

Tiny engine + hideous bodykit + stupidly big wheels = mag feature

Crap cars, quite often driven by knobheads.

Nowadays though, with stuff like old import Impreza WRX's going so cheaply its hardly surprising to see people moving on to stuff like that.
