The VZ-R N1 Mystery

well in japland one thing to take into account is their idea of std fuel is 100 ron compaired to our 95 ron .
but here is where the real bollock kick is their top of the range fuel is 110 ron +
so the power loss is defo in the fuel. Ive even heard of some fuel over there being as much as 115 ron.

BP offer another variant of their BP Ultimate fuel called BP Ultimate 102 with an octane rating of 102 and are available from the following petrol stations: -

Are there any UK-based VZ-R owners? If there were then you could fill up on a tankful prior to visiting a Rolling Road say - would be interested to see what the results would be...

Think so iirc - but that was at least 6 months ago i checked those prices...

Certainly will be a damn site expensive - there's one in South Queensferry near where i work, might take a wee detour there to check it out...

My mate used to run his 360BHP Subaru on about 105.... 99 RON fuel plus the octane boost.

putting 95 in that would be like us putting 85 in the Almera!! Imagine how shit it would run lol!!

Tesco round here all do 99 RON too but it's fuckin expensive at the moment....:(

I used to run my UK 300zx on 95 but have to run super now it's chipped. My brothers Micra turbo is mapped to 99ron and only ever runs on V-power.

The N1 is overrated.

Ever since I was a passenger in one, I came to that conclusion.

And that was with a filter and NISMO exhaust.

To start with the claimed figure is 200PS (197bhp). The figures are all down to fuel and how the car has been driven. Ive drove plenty blue top VZR's alot with the same mods and some are just quicker than others. Suppose its how hard they've been driven and how well they've been looked after.

Ive personal experience of an N1 making 192bhp on the rollers and that was with full exhaust but running on 95 octane so owner was happy with that.

It is alot got to do with drivers of them aswell, they need to be redlined in every gear to stay in the VVL when you change gear. The N1 i mentioned above drag raced it against plenty of CTR's, had never been beaten, 1st gear CTR pulls away cause the Vtech kicks earlier than VVL but as soon as N1 hit VVL in 1st gear it pulled ahead and stayed there!

That stuff tallpaul mentioned was the stuff they were promoting at Donny last year, they actually had a rolling road setup and were claiming that that fuel had a 100bhp difference to standard fuel!!
I couldn't believe it either.. Thought they had fixed the figures or something!! :)

Something I cant get around is the fact that some blue top owners say they have beaten them sure dont they have a bigger throttle body a second set of injectors, ported and polished and the head is supposed to be skimmed more than a blue top for higher compression ratio's surely they can't be beaten by their inferior brother!

my results shouldn't be taken as gospel...

my VZ-R has been raced and driven hard with good oil, plugs, leads, 3" air intake from the front bar and a 2.4" 5Zigen exhaust....
it pulled 93.1kw but was still climbing when it hit the limiter at 8200rpm.

my N1 was put on the same dyno about 5 mins later and reached 93.7 kw... It is completely stock, had been driven for about an hour total over the past 18 months and was drawing in hot air from the engine bay. It also had its spark plug wells completely filled with oil due to a missing seal under the rocker cover..

Whilst I am aware that the N1s don't perform to given potential. My results at this stage are nothing to get up arms over. When I am happy the N1 has had a good run in stage then I will compare again.

and we also have to take into consideration, Nissan may have only hit 197bhp once or twice with the car, with a perfectly tuned engine on good quality jap fuel. We are trying to reach the same benchmark with 11 year old cars, crap fuel and probably after many a beatings...

I have only driven my N1 a couple of times but it seems to pull so much harder down low and sounds so throaty even with stock intake. I reckon if I opened it up a bit more it would be a mean car...
