This morning before heading off to work I de-iced my windscreen as usual. En route, I used them to clear the excess water and they stopped working. I could hear the motor going ok but the wipers were not moving. Upon inspection, what had happened was the wipers had stuck to the windscreen due to the frost. When I went to activate them, there was excess stress put upon the linkage under the scuttle panel and it gave way. Had to battle may way home in an arctic blizzard with no wipers, was mad craic alright.
Got it fixed, was a 10 minute job at most, and got to see how the mechanism worked. A tip for what remains of the winter, when you are de-frosting your windscreen, make sure the wipers arent stuck to the glass lol.
