Allow me to introduce myself...

Rust isn't as common on modern cars thanks to more advanced corrosion protection, but it still happens, and It seems to be a bit of a problem with Almeras. Don't panic just yet, you've got 4 years on my car and the later Almeras may have had a different protection or batch of sheet metal. I'd still take a look though, and make sure that the factory underseal is all intact, as that seems to be the root cause of my problems.
Parts wise, my Ph1 bumper parts won't fit to your Ph2, but I was thinking more along the lines of additions to improve the look and driving experience of the car.
As far as replacing the 'mera goes, I'm undecided at the moment. I'm not able to drive right now due to dislocating my shoulder, so I'm in no hurry for a new car. When I am able to drive again, I'll probably just get insured on my girlfriend's car, as I'm commuting on the train for the next few months at least. I would be tempted though. I really did grow to like the car in the 11 months I drove it, and I'd be interested in trying again with perhaps a different engine and slightly newer chassis..

08 / 12 / 13 - REPAIR WORK UPDATE
=============================

It comes to no surprise that my first venture into personal hands-on car repair and maintenance is immediately fraught with immense difficulty, no doubt also due to my immense ignorance.

As you guys know, I had an accident not too long ago, a minor thing - I went into the back of a Qashqai.
I'm trying to repair this bent mess of plastic and metal but it's a royal pain it in the proverbial trying to remove the front bumper!!!
Now before you guys flame me for not doing research, I have actually attempted to follow this guide (http://www.almeraownersclub.com/threads/how-to-remove-bumper-and-lights.19316/) but for some reason, his car looks different to mine. Do I even have a N16 Almera? Specifically, when he says to turn the wheels full lock to undo the mudguard bolt and the bolt directly underneath it to free the bumper from the wing. I don't have this bolt.

Please see attached photos (warning 6 photos taken from mobile) and let me know what you guys think I should do. My dad is a Mercedes owner and always takes his car to the official dealership for even the smallest issues, he thinks I should just pay a bloke a bob and get it sorted without getting my hands dirty (so to speak). I feel that this is just lazy, but mainly I can't afford to shell out 600 to pay Tel the guy at the local bodyshop to get it done. He didn't even do a good job the last time I went into a Merc.

What my car looks like with the clips undone and grills removed.

What bolt?

The black bar behind the bumper is fubar'd on the right as you can see. Do I need to buy a replacement from the Bay of the E?
Also, the current black bar looks rusty where it had been damaged before. How do I treat this?

The silver bar in front of the black bar - to the left of the previous photo) also in a bad way. See the massive crack?

Many thanks for those of you who have spent time to read this.

The bolt is there. Just where the bumper meets the wing. Push the arch liner aside slight there where there is a divot.

Your front panels are bent and cracked but you seemed more worried about surface corrosion on a few fittings?
No offense, but if your can't remove the front bumper how are you going to replace the bent metal?

While on this topic, if I got a new front bumper retainer and wants to straighten my van out is there anywhere to get dimensions from do I know what to pull where without trial and error refitting of everything

Here's your M***** f****** bolt. It's hidden behind the wheel arch liner. Just pull it out the way to gain access. Don't be shy, it's pretty robust.

Excuse the dirty car, I've not been able to clean it!

As for rusty bolts and trim clips, it's the least of your worries. Unless you have an air conditioned, temperature controlled garage, and only intend to take it out on occasional dry days, corroded fittings are just part of car ownership.

UPDATE 21/01/14

I have fixed the majority of the problems. The car is good as new.

On to other news, I've suddenly had the urge to buy a second N16 to play with on the weekends. Regardless of the expenses this second car will incur I fully intend to transform this family grocery getter into a bona fide street legal track car.

RANDOM PHOTOS AND YOUTUBE LINKS DELETED
REASON: TO KEEP THIS THREAD CLEAN

Ok...
Three quick questions for you guys. I need a bit of help since I'm still a greenhorn.

1) I've been browsing around on the forum (mainly Ed's resource links thread) but have come to some threads like the 5-stud conversion thread which say that 'you do not have permission to view blah blah blah'.
Is there something I need to do in addition to being registered to the forum in order to view these threads?

2) Further to the previous post, I'm beginning to think that it might be better to do a gradual transformation instead of shooting for too much (what with the proposed SR swap etc). Can anyone give me some information on QG15DE + T upgrade? Like has it ever been done before? Who can I get to do it for me? What are the tried and tested parts required and at what levels of tune is it safe for stock engine internals (assuming I'm only looking for 150bhp)? - FYI I did search the forums with keywords but there wasn't any information particularly helpful to me.

3) Currently just going to do some cheap and useful upgrades like wind deflectors (any recommendations?), fog lamps (not sure how to install fog stalk in the cabin), Pre-facelift N16 rear lights, front splitter, window tints, bigger brakes and suspension until I know where I am going with the QG15DE.

1. Yes, you need to be a paid member

2. QG15DE+T wouldnt be a sensible option because of the weakness of the QG15DE gearbox along with greater support available on here for the SR20DE swap and then the +T addition.

3. Climair wind deflectors appear to be popular on this forum (SonicUK and EdK have them i think)

You cant repair the front bumper support but you want to do an engine swap and wide arch kit? I think you need to concentrate on the areas within your ken. If you want a road legal track car then the N16 is not a good place to start. Much more research required before asking to be spoon-fed by members on here.

Well maybe you missed the part where I updated the status of my car but here it is again; everything is as good as new, I bought bits and pieces from ebay and managed to do the work myself with a modest set of tools. For me all this is a learning curve and I'm putting a lot of effort into researching online as well as actual hands on. I don't want to be spoon-fed anything by anyone but a little nod or pointer here and there or an opinion would be most appreciated. My difficulty is that I don't visit forums so I'm a stranger to how they work and where everything is stored; in fact this is the only one I'm currently registered to. So if it seems like I'm asking a lot of obvious questions then I'm sorry, I just don't know my way round a forum to get all the information I need. I don't purposely ask stupid questions without any prior attempt at looking for an answer.
Sorry Spook, I'll check my tongue if need be. I've only posted 10 times in total so I guess it's a good a time as any to start learning forum etiquette.

You don't have to apologise. It was just an observation on my part. I did miss that update on your progress as I was distracted by all the pictures of spurious body kits and shiny things. My advice still stands though. I would concentrate on tackling small jobs first and build up your experience with the hands-on stuff. You can research all the bits you need in between times then and you'll start to learn more and more quickly. I was in your position once. Ignore the urge to supercharge, turbo charge, twin charge...
Get your N/A tuning bits done first with exhausts, air filters etc. Earn you wings doing that and then move onwards and upwards.

QG18 swap and buy @fidd70 supercharger kit ;)

....Phone....

Right so the situation is like this. A friend of mine has recently passed his drivers test. He has a wife and a baby son and needs a small family car with a budget of £4000.
PERFECT! I have just the car for him. I plan to sell my car to him and then buy a 1.8 as it sounds like a better base to work from (and even if I don't do anything with it, the 1.8 will be more enjoyable to drive than the 1.5 anyway).
QUESTION
Which 1.8 model should I get which would be most compatible with a supercharger?
I have looked online and found some agreeable looking SE, SXE and SVE's but as much as I want the SVEs I am worried that they would be too complicated to install mods into. Let me know!
Also, I found 'AlmerSleeper' and his N16 on one of the threads I was directed to from Ed's resources. Is that the same supercharger from Fidd70? If so, I am enthusiastic with the prospect of extracting 200 horses from the 1.8 lump!
