how did you get the skirt so far down pal, im trying to fit 2 front wings and I can hardly get the skirt to budge, do you need to do something with the clips I can see behind? Never done it before thats all. Cheers

Today gave it an oil and filter change, fitted new spark plugs and HT Leads, refitted all the fixings and clips on the passenger arch liner.

Then wondered why the car felt weird everytime I pulled onto the drive.

Oh

Anyone know where I got the plug from for the bootlid on the N1?

So will I have to fully remove the skirts to do both wings then rebond it on? Thanks for the reply.

Nope, you should be able to pull the skirt back and break the bond to like, halfway down the door for example, this should allow enough room to get the wing off.

Be careful though, P2 skirts are really flexible but if the P1 skirts are anything like the front splitter, it may break.

Yeah the bondants broken partially already i'll have to very gently pull at it and see if I can it away enough. Also the rear screws for the skirts are rounded badly from previous owner so will be a pain to get out, I was thinking loosening these would make it easier though. Is it just two bolts to undo the front wings at the bottom? Cheers.

yeah, there are two hidden along the door shut too if you havent spotted them, one at the top under the rubber and one near the bottom which you have to get to from behind the arch liner IIRC.

woah tripodder, car looks good; out of curiosity how come you took off the fto fronts?

Picked up a gearbox from Ben, he mentioned that he couldnt get the speed sensor out of the box, so someone had a go at removing it, ended up drilling it out, wouldnt have been so bad but he blew an airline over it......

So stripped the box down to clean it out and it was a bit worse than I first imagined :(

I sat with a vacuum and removed every last piece of swarf I could find for about 3 hours, I know I wont have gotten everything out but I did find some fairly large chunks of metal that were already present in the box from wear etc, all the synchros and gears looked great, there were a few marks on the FD gear where something had obviously gotten between the teeth at some point.

Bits I found

Its actually quite surprising how dirty the inside of a box can get from not having regular oil changes... when compared to the VLSD box I had, that looked basically brand new inside

Now removing one of the selector arms I noted some odd wear marks like it has been forced down at some point some how.

Here you can see it with a normal one

and the gaps thats present as a result

I have swapped it for a mint one now, and given the box a good clean inside removing all the varnishing that had occurred.

Got it back together last night

Im going to flush the box through when I first fit it with some fresh oil, now I have a shit load of ATF fluid sitting around Im looking at just running the engine and letting the box warm up then draining this and filling with some proper fluid..

Thoughts on that? I know ATF fluid is very thin but the box wont actually be under any load....

Clutch has just arrived from Trug as I write this, just need the flywheel to turn up and its game on.

The drain plug has a magnet on yeah, they are always filthy if the oil hasnt been changed in an age, wouldnt be any good for Ally chunks though.

I remember seeing a video with the owner of Spoon commenting on servicing and saying that gearbox oil should be changed with every engine oil change, as the type of work it has to do is fairly brutal, so keeping it changed and clean is a great idea.

When I first got my VE running I ran that for a minute or 2 with no oil in the box, once the excitement died down I could hear the cogs turning clearly dry, filled it up with oil and it's done plenty of miles with no issues since so I would imagine with any oil it would be fine

I did do 2 or 3 track days using machine oil in a gearbox too, long story but up til 4am night before, gearbox was shit anyway and it got no worse with that in it
