eek that looks scary mark! Imagine doing some speed round a bend and that happens!

Which is the exact reason I`d rather change them now, as I`m going to work in the GTi this week, (& aint happy about it,) & the gritters are out!

they only snap when pulling away i think, our p10 one went pulling away from a junction turning right, pulled away and it went bang and stopped. still not a nice thing though, glad it was in a quite road, could have been the end of the p10 if it was a busy road.

have to say Fred if i was after an almera GTi yours would be at the top of my list, Kelv doesnt seem shy to spend the money so it would have been looked after when he had it and you seem the same

Thanks for the kind words Jimmy. :)

Just to re-tread some ground for a moment,

It may have had new shafts fitted before Kelv had it (doubt it though, as there are no receipts to say so), but, if I change them @ the earliest opportunity, then I KNOW they aren`t gonna go any time soon, instead of having that nagging thought @ the back of my mind, saying "Is it gonna break today???" every time I get in it.

To nick the phrase from the one-legged car wash guy that was in the video posted on here a while back, it`s called "reducing the potential", or "peace of mind".

The more stuff you replace, the less chance it has of breaking. ;)

There's also the 'if it aint broke, dont fix it' saying though Fred!

I understand what you're saying though, i have just spent over £700 having the rust fixed on a £900 car, just havent heard of d/shafts being a common problem on the almera in the past. Depends how important peace of mind is i guess, but yeah id say replacing bits before they go is a better thing to spend money on than cosmetic mods, at least at first!

Thanks Kelv,

The only reason I`m thinking about it, is because I sometimes get wheelspin going from 2nd to 3rd, & as that`s usually around 5k rpm (think about 40ish mph), if one decides to let go then, it`s not going to be good. :(

And before anyone says "slow down then" all I can say is "FECK OFF, it`s a GTi ffs!!!" ;)

LOL. slow down! i get the occasional wheelspin from 2nd to 3rd.

You can't expect not to wheel spin, mine does it at 60mph in third.

If your willing to replace it then go ahead, but surely just replace the whole car if your worried about it.

I know a lad with a 320bhp Corsa, which spins at 90mph in 5th. There is a price to pay for BHP+FWD.

If the wheels are spinning then it's doubtful that it'll snap as the tyres are reducing the stress on the shaft due to the loss of traction. It's when you have good traction that things break.

My second one snapped with a spirited 1st-2nd change.

my 1st one snapped when i was been a bit to throttle happy and dropping the clutch in an angery moment..

2nd time was a bit funny..

I was slowwing down as there was somebody turning in the road ahead, slowed right down to 5mph do dropped it into 1st and bought the clutch up - again been a touch enthusiastic on the gas...

The drivers side wheel spun up as it was on a grid, it got off the grid and gripped and sent a lot of power to the passenger side - snap.... funky!!
