hi and can you help?

Forgot to mention - watch it if getting a replacement MAF,

Pre June 2001 models (IIRC) have the temp sensor in the feed from the airbox, after that it's a combined MAF/temp sensor. If you've got a lead going into the pipe from the airbox to the MAF it's the older model.

You can see the temp thermistor in the MAF if you look carefully on the newer combo unit.
Was quoted £40 for the former and £170 for the latter (trade price) when mine went.

Check your Camshaft Position Sensor first though if that's the reported fault.

p.s. If any of this helps please sign up as a member you'll get a ton of help and good discounts on insurance and parts, invites to group meets and a good crack into the bargain.

Will be the best 85p a month you ever spend.

that's brilliant cheers. I did wonder about the cam sensor, my cavalier has endless problems with the cam and crank sensors. the ecowreck is a great engine when it works. I have had it off the clock before, equates to around 140mph when speedo drift is taken into account, but the engine very rarely actually works properly haha, and the symptoms are pretty similar.

I've gone through 3 cam sensors and 2 crank sensors in the 18 mths or so that i've had the car, and had to make myself a new engine management loom as the old one burnt itslef out (bad design from vauxhall, their design uses common wiring for both sensors, which overheats and burns out, so i re-designed it to an extent, so that it was all seperate, and used higher amperage wiring)

is their a likelihood that the cam sensor fault would be due to the new chain stretching? that would probably be easier to answer once i've found my phone lead and posted the pic i took of the tensioner! I'd like to think that the chain would last more than 5-10'000 miles though, even if it was a pattern part.

Luckily the old man works at a motor factors that only supplies the trade, and he gets a healthy discount, so shouldn't be looking at too high a price for a new sensor. It is the older type with the temp sensor in the inlet tract before the MAF btw.

Is there a way of testing the cam sensor with a multimeter? I hate fuel injection! Give me a carb or set of carbs anyday haha. I also have a 30 year old series III landrover, which really is my pride and joy. the electrics are as simple as it's possible to get. there are only 4 fuses, and everything else is purely mechanical

magic, that's great! been pissing down here all day so haven't had a chance to get out to look at it. tomorrow hopefully!

hello m8 i work 4 nissan and there is a code p3410 ill have a look on monday to find out wot it relates to but from memory i think its the maf sensor the only way to turn the light off is to take it to nissan or a garage with diagnostics to turn it off but id say u need a maf sensor to fix the running problem.

cheers, I've already got the light off myself, althought th erunning problems are still there, as well as the huge fuel consumption, 1/4 tank for 20.3 miles, and that was at an average speed of 40mph, due to very thick fog. my 2 litre cav used just the width of the fuel guage needle for the same journey! Actually, thats a little strange when i think about it, as code 0171 refers to lean mixture.... gonna try and get hold of a MAF and cam pos sensor and see what happens.
