Hi everybody! (now with pics of my GTi)

Hi there,

Thought I would say hello. I don't actually have an Almera yet but am desperately on the hunt for one in my area (Exeter) or South West ish.

I currently drive a 205 GTi which was originally a 1.6 but now has the 16 valve Mi16 in it, I fully rebuilt the engine and fitted it myself but Ive started doing 65 miles a day to work and although it's a fun and fast car, Pugs aren't that great for uber mileage so I've decided to garage it and get an Almera GTi since the little Pug is a bit noisy and rough round the edges.

Test drove an Almera GTi a couple weeks ago but the MOT runs out in December, it will need new discs on the rear for the MOT and it had 120k miles on it and the guy wanted £2200+ for it so I wasn't too sure, just seemed a lot to me. I've had a quick browse of the free access bits of the forum but when I get a 'Mera Ill join up to the club etc, but just a quick couple of questions.

Are there any inherent problems with these cars that should be checked out before buying, rust a problem? Like on 205s you always have to check the rear beam etc.

There's induction kits and such like for so many cars that all claim power gains, but is there any realistic and fairly affordable way to squeeze a few more horses out of the Almera that actually works?

What should the Almera rev to? The one I test drove seemed to hit the limiter just after 5.5k revs ish, and being used to 6700 limiter on my Mi I thought that was a bit low.

And as I understand it, the engine is the same basic engine as is in the Pulsar GTi-r but presumably with an altered compression ratio and different rods/pistons (and obvious differences) etc, but is there any way of turbo'ing the Almera engine or not worth bothering and just source a GTi-r engine? Keen for a bit more power but it's not a priority at this stage.

Sorry for the Spanish Inquisition, hopefully I will be able to post more useful stuff on here in the near future

And why are they all up Norf?! Arrrgh! Trying to find one that's close enough to go have a look at is a nightmare. Theres a nice black one down my road but its not for sale and I think they just went into the back of someone else anyway :(

Cheers guys,
Tris

the rev limiter is 6900 rpm but the gauges arent that accurate, even so i think they normally over read so 5500 doesnt seem right.

mechanically there pretty much bullet proof aslong as they have seen some care and not constant abuse, a rattle on start up is normal (cam chain) but it should go after a few seconds, if it keeps rattling then its either the tensioner or the chain has stretched. never really here of any suspension problems and driveshafts dont seem like a problem either. normally very reliable and should do 250k without to much trouble but its down to what kind of life the car has had really

bodywork does rust around all arches and under the sills does go but if its a bodykit car it should be ok as the metal is protected from the salt and dirt, mine is one of the earlier cars and it only needs a rub down and paint so dont expect holes etc

engine has got different rods and pistons to a GTI-R and the head and inlet manifold are different aswell, think most people that go down that route get a GTI-R engine but you can keep the original engine if you want to

Woohoo! Picking up an S plate GTi on Friday! :D

Black, lowered, 17's (unfortunately), twin loud zorst ( to be fitted with a rear silencer to make it bearable), 4-2-1 manifold and induction kit and tinted rear windows.

Can't wait! Will host pics and sign up to the AOC once it arrives :)

Thanks guys,

Got it tonight, and omfg what a car. Its not as quick as my 205 was by any means but it's a completely different animal. Nice and comfy all the mod cons, but I fear the noisy exhaust will need quietening but damn I love it :D :D

I shall host some pics up of it tomorrow

Right pub time...

Ok here's a couple of shoddy pics with the camera phone. Not sure where my digicam is  so will get some proper pics up when I find it.

A previous owner installed a monitor for the battery voltage and rev counter. Not sure what it is exactly but it stores on the screen the max revs reached and shows bat voltage which I think is quite useful. Unfortunately the bulb in the dash behind the vent selection dial has gone, is this a big job to fix? (In my experience dashes apart = big pain in the arse :( ).

Anyway love the car, get it up to revs and boy does it go and with it lowered a smidgen it corners like a demon and still feels very stable at speed :)

Also where can I get my hands on a suitable spare wheel, helpfully the previous owner decided not to provide me with a 5th!

looks familer espically the twin exhaust and where the GTI badge is loks like grays old one from liverpool!

HPI revealed the guy I bought this off had it for just about a year, and he lived near Plymouth.

Don't think its the same guy.

Anyway thanks for the warm welcome guys ;)

PMSL @ doofus` avy!!!

I kinda remember that discussion in Baja, & the `how gay do you look from up here?` message :D but not much else!

Am I being blind or can I not make a custom signature on here?

Or do I have to become an AOC member first?

Cheers
