P.S: is your avy from the Tienenmen(sp?) Square footage, as I seem to recognise it

Ah right, I'd best get my cheque book out then

Yeah its a mick take from when the student stood in front of the tank in Tianenmen (sp) Square back in the early 90's was it?

Can`t remember when exactly, but recognised the shape of the lamp post in the bottom corner & the markings on the ground, but didn`t realise he was holding a bag, that`s what confused me.

Right, gave it a quick wash today and took some photos. Wouldn't you know as it was drying off it started fricking raining

Hehe cheers. Yeah the Pug is a Beemer eater. Got the standard 1.6 badges on the side so the 330s and 325 drivers are surprised when they're flat out and I go sailing past in it ;) Also matches brand new RX8s to 145 (airfield of course), that guy was most pissed off.

Need a reliable car for commuting though so the Almera is the workhorse and the Pug the fun weekend car once i've sorted a few niggling issues with it.

Yes that guy is Domo Kun, a legendary Japanese cartoon character. A mate jhas recently come back from japan and is posting me a little 7 inch Domo Kun of my own, I might have to fix him to the parcel shelf when he arrives :D He looks evil but is harmless and has a heart of gold. If you search on youtube or something Im sure you can find some snipepts of the show he's in, Japanese so it's random as f*ck!

the rev limiter is 6900 rpm but the gauges arent that accurate, even so i think they normally over read so 5500 doesnt seem right.

mechanically there pretty much bullet proof aslong as they have seen some care and not constant abuse, a rattle on start up is normal (cam chain) but it should go after a few seconds, if it keeps rattling then its either the tensioner or the chain has stretched. never really here of any suspension problems and driveshafts dont seem like a problem either. normally very reliable and should do 250k without to much trouble but its down to what kind of life the car has had really

bodywork does rust around all arches and under the sills does go but if its a bodykit car it should be ok as the metal is protected from the salt and dirt, mine is one of the earlier cars and it only needs a rub down and paint so dont expect holes etc

engine has got different rods and pistons to a GTI-R and the head and inlet manifold are different aswell, think most people that go down that route get a GTI-R engine but you can keep the original engine if you want to

I don't think the cold rattle is cam chain rattle. It doesn't sound like it, and if it was it would go away much quicker, plus if the chain was rattling it would be too slack causing cam timing issues and the engine wouldn't run so well. plus, if you 'listen' to the engine through a rod then you can hear the noise doesn't always come from the chain side of the engine.

I'm convinced it's a valve clearance issue as from cold, (once the initial loud rattle disappears) I can still hear it rattling slighly, but when warm it goes away (shims warm up and expand slightly). Also the cold rattle isn't consistent. it's not always there, and can vary depending on whether you park uphill/downhill, how hot the engine is when you turn it off and whether you let it idle before switching off or not. These affect how much oil is in teh head when the engine is turned off, and how well it drains away afterwards, thus making the rattle inconsistent. As soon as my 205 is out of the garage I'm gonna book some days off work to do a ilttle exploratory surgery on the car.

Another thing, I thought this was a symptom found in GA engines, not the GTi's SR20?

Silly question, but could it not be the injectors (as raised before by someone)?

Was under the bonnet of the GTi tonight, listening for rattles/ticking, & it could just be the injectors working normally.

Don`t know for certain though, so could be miles out.

then why doesn't it go away? If the chain was constantly slack there'd be other running issues.

The constant knocking may be injectors like AG said. The tensioner may have issues of its own though, mine needed a new one plus chain (since it being slack-ish at high RPM had made it stretch a bit), which was a bitch of a job as well.

If I can figure out how to do it, I`ll get a vid of it running @ the weekend & post it here for you to compare.

Unless anyone more skilled in uploading vids fancies doing it.

24seven weve got an sr20 and a GA14, both do it and if anything the sr20 is alot more noticeable, tbh i hardly notice it on the GA14.

got a feeling your problem maybe different to what other people have, looks like youve done a fair bit of searching for it but im going on what hundreds of people beleive the noise is and you are the only person i can remember reading about who doubts were the noise is coming from. to me it makes sense if it is the tensioner, before oil pressure builds up its not going to tension the chain enough which makes sense. also if its only slightly slack for a very short time would that not be ok? its going to mean the cam timing isnt right but surely it would be out by so little for such a short time it wouldnt matter as much? especially as the car is at idle so no difference is power would be noticed anyway etc.

be interested to hear whats wrong with your car, i dont think its the cam chain though and tbh i would be suprised if you found out that what hundreds of people have beleived for years isnt true, not saying your wrong but other people think its the cam chain and have something to back that up

The injectors do make a loud ticking noise, on just about every petrol car I've had, after a few hours of owning it I'm like "should that ticking be there?", 'cos I'm thinking it's the head itself ticking...

Hmm all this talk of rattly chains and funny noises has got me a bit worried tbh. When I first test drove the car it had a rattle for about 2 seconds on start up which went straight away. On driving and pootling round it sounded fine no rattles.

However after about a week of driving, I noticed a dash warning light flicked on and went straight off, was one on the right hand side above water temp gauge, it was so brief I didn’t see what it was.

Also over the last few days it has started sounding a little bit more rattly within the first few minutes of driving from cold, sitting in traffic the rattle doesn’t sound too good, get it up to revs and it goes away but this morning within about 10 minutes of driving from cold the red oil can light flashed on twice very briefly so I am now very worried. After the engine has had plenty of time to warm up there is no rattling on idle.

What is the red oil light for, does that indicate low pressure or low level (shouldn't be level as it's up to max on the dipstick)? My 205 had an oil pressure gauge which was a godsend, why not have one in the Mera :(

Going to change the oil and filter tonight, wondering if the person I bought it off wasn’t 100% truthful about a recent oil and filter change. I really should have changed it straight away anyway, curse my forgetfulness!

So onto that what oil weight and type should I use? I’ve got a Hellfrauds trade card so get oil fairly cheap and have always used their Semi-synthetic in my 205 which has performed brilliantly. With winter coming is it worth swapping out for something with a lower cold start viscosity? Are the GTi filters available at Halfrauds too?

Also what do you do for info on the engines? I have an Almera Haynes manual but helpfully it says in large print on the cover “DOES NOT COVER 2 LITRE GTi” and I can’t seem to find one that does.

Finally how much am I looking at to get the cam chain changed? I can't see any evidence in the reciept history of it being done so would prefer to err on the side of caution. If it's not rocket science Im sure I could manage it myself, I've done a full engine rebuild and installation in the Pug on my own so no stranger to engine work.

Apologies for the Spanish Inquisition,

Cheers

stick some 10-40 in it, I normally use castrol magnatec and it seems good but I change it every 3 thou, just used some castrol edge 0-40 in my lasses car (B16a3) at the weekend though and might try it in mine it seems good

I'd pick a oil filter up from a nissan dealer, theyre cheaper there anyway and everytime ive got one anywhere else theyve been the wrong ones, they have the right thread size etc but are too deep, ours are quite shallow

sr20 de's are noisy engines, noisy injectors, noisy tappets, 4 branch manifolds make eatra noise too as the walls are thinners

but the red light shouldnt come on unless there is no oil/pressure, could be nothing but could be a oil pump failure, known a few to do that, but on the bright side theres plenty of spare engines for them

if you want to go turbo do a sr20 det swap, if you become a full member theres plenty more info kicking about
