N16 Reliability

2000 N16 1.5

So far ..
LH rear seized/wonky caliper.
seized boot lock.
unfathomable fault in the swirl-control-valve circuit (likely just a short).

boot lock - do u mean tha handle or the lock itself, my handle is always sticking, lost count of the number of times ive been out with the wd40 and lithium grease.

my power steering is leaking now and so is my AC Gas I got it topped it up last week Saturday and today I turned on my Air Con and there was nothing. I Opened the bonnet and checked the pipe and it was warm :(

need to get it checked out ASAP

I own my N16 only for some 4 months, it has 105 000 km, but i have noticed the whistling sound at high rpm, and I guess problem with servo (it shakes the whole car when steering wheel is turned from left to the right).....Also, the display in the instrument cluster doesen't always show the numbers properly, they are "broken" sometimes...

hmm, could be wheel balance or maybe wishbone bushes if the car is wandering all over the road when cornering. As for the insturment cluster this is a reasonably common fault too i think, the bulbs for illumination of the instrument clustere are also prone to blowing.

I wasn't clear, the car shakes when turning wheels at standing still...Like the servo pump is out of power...No problem when the car is moving...

My car is now called Medusa - chop the head off one problem and another grows in its place...

Now the back window demister doesn't come on - press the button and the light doesn't come on... I hope its a blown fuse or something - can't be bothered stripping the dash again

seen that before, its the whole heater control unit not a fuse, source a 2nd hand one!!!

when you do change is though, go easy on the cable 'grab's for the heater control knobs, they break easily.

flex on the exhaust needs changeing, driver door inside window seal (i have just replaced), there is a little rust bubble on the front driver pillar, brake pads and probably discs soon. but bear in mind this is an X reg car. nearly 8 year old.

My 1.8 engine whines and squeaks, some belt or something I assume, and slightly annoying vibrations over 5500rpm, shittly designed engine I guess. Passenger door fell off, that was fun, electric windows getting slower and slower, fan direction control broke, boot handle sticks. Alloys 'bubbling', strange to describe... No major problems yet though touch wood.

What's this rear brake caliper problem? Costly to fix?

To combat the rust, as i'm sure many an N15 owner will testify, the best bet to combat the rust is either weld the problem up or replace it with the genuine nissan article and then underseal it...

Garage fixed my seized rear caliper problem on Monday - 90 quid for a new caliper as the old one was 'fucked' (technical term). At least they didn't try to blame it on me painting them without removing them first

Still, it's 7 year old car and that's the only real problem apart from that obscure (but only mildly irritating) engine fault.

are there any major troublespots with the n16? i'm going to look at a 2.2 Di next week with 92k on the clock and just wondered if there is anything in particular to look for. is rust a problem like the n15 only its been mentioned on this thread yet every n16 i've seen looks pretty rust free. is it underneath where it tends to show first? also is the interior pretty flimsy as thats been mentioned too. any problems with higher mileage cars?

any help would be much appreciated.

I bought my 2000 1.8 with 80k about 8 months ago. I've had a few little things break, nothing important really. The interior seems pretty tough to me, the only thing is the plastic (in my one anyway) is light coloured for the bottom half of the dash, so I guess dirt and scuffing could be a problem. I've got rust only around the boot handle, the rest of the car seems good. I've got some of those annoying belt noises from the engine but it runs smooth and seems fine. I guess check the heater controls actually work cos they've gone in the 2 n15's and this n16 - I guess its the same part.

i finally got my horn working again, was a loose cable in the harness i was told but on the reciept it says it was on the relay ox but its sorted now so its fine.

i have rust on my rear arch that has spread really quick and is now a bad spot, waiting for the weather to get a bit drier and ill waxoyl the lot just to slow it a bit.

interior is pretty solid, few creaks here and there and it scratches quite easily, the handles on inside that you close door with and scuffs in the footwells. depends how its treated thu i suppose

Got my crossmember welded about 4 months ago at the passenger side and at that time, the driver's side didn't look too bad. I checked it the other day and it's practically GONE.

New front cross member coming during the week.

Local garage told me that he's had countless micras and almeras with completely rusted front crossmembers, so I'd urge you all to take a look.
