MY BIG FAT JAP UPDATE - Well I decided to restore the Gti and over the last couple of months it's starting to come together ....
The bodywork was going to require a little tidying up and was also thinking on what i could add to put my own stamp on her ! The sills and underbody are pretty solid ! However the inner rear turrets were a different matter altogether having initially thinking not too bad ! the more I poked the worse it became !
Anyways this was the first job to be tackled ! The rotten metal was cut out and new metal welded in the areas round the rear turrets ( nearside was worse than offside by the way ) rear seat belt on the near side was also strengthened with some new metal ( prevension really ) ! The two " VALLEY OF THE GANGES " under both rear wheel arches were also plated over and stone chipped to prevent any more shite getting up there ! ( thanks Sam for that idea ) There was also some surface rust in the boot Area and under the spare wheel which has been tackled , primed and is waiting for a splash of colour ! ( can't seem to find any BS7 in rattle Can tho ) !
Next on the list was to get the bodywork somewhere near decent ! over the course of the last few weekends I have had both sides , front and rear bumpers , hood and a small repair done on the tailgate ! Don't think it was going to be such a big job ! Turned out rather well in fact !
I saved myself a few hundred quid by deciding to refurb the Gti alloys myself !
There was a fair bit of curb damage but nothing too major ! So I set about them with the Dremel tool and using various grades of wet And dry got them sorted and painted ! Not perfect by any means but a pretty decent effort considering there were done with rattle cans and painted in the garden !
All 4 similar to this !
Dremeled and flatted !
Primed !
Painted and lacquered !
Next up was too refurb the wiper arms as they were looking a little tired ! Again I used the Dremel to sort the oxidised metal , flatted them back then primed and painted with the old rattle cans !
Some of the parts I've sourced from the great EGAY !
X4 uniroyal rainsport 2 ( 195/50/15)
( needed some in a hurry ) guy said they were around a week old !
Some new front fog lamps ( as my fogs were both cracked - think these are phase 1 fogs but there in mint condition and work which is the main thing )
A new roof antenna and mount ( as mine was snapped inside. )
Some clear side repeaters and centre console lid ( Thanks Rick )
I've tidied up the calipers and discs just to tide me over until I source some new parts !
And some nice new Purple Blox wheel lugs ! I chose this colour instead of the blue as I thought it would give me a little contrast with the blue and black theme !
