I assume the protection was about the same on all Nissan builds of the era. Underseal was applied, but as the pictures from the day we treated it show, it all came off in big flakes along with a bunch if rust. It looks as though it has rusted behind the underseal. It's kinda odd.

As for welding, there is bare metal under there, but having little to no knowledge of welding techniques, I wouldn't know how easy it would be. All things considered, it's probably not going to be worth the substantial effort and cost.
 
If it was me and my car,i would not do anymore with it,i would just run it till the mot/tax is due then break it for parts,you would get more money for parts then selling the car as it is.And could use that money towards something else or another one of these if you like them.

Unknown at the moment. I've not been driving it, but my girlfriend has been giving it occasional runs to keep the battery going etc. No misfire or stalling reported, but possibly down on a bit of power.
 
Could be the onset. You don't need to drive it to know if the chain is going if the mil is on. Get the codes read I bet it's chain related.
 
QG15 engined N16 with 115000 on the clock, it's likely to be the cause. With the chassis how it is, and my tax about to run out, I think It'll be sorned and I'll break it when I can.

Shame that-serious onset of tinworm hidden behind the bumper in the inner wings was the reason mine went-fabricator by trade and in all honesty I could have saved it had I had the desire,-which I didn't,decent car but not a great car I wanted to spend my weekends on-If it is chain problems on a rotting car i'd look at getting rid
 
Yeah, there's too much wrong with it to make it worth salvaging, and even if it was, I don't really have the spare cash to spend on it at the moment anyway. It is a shame though, I'd have liked to have kept it longer.

Seebeebee, I'm a bit sad that your N16 is in such rough condition. Seems like a lot of money and man hours is required to save it (which may not be worth it as N16s can be had for next to nothing these days).
Still, you actually landed with one in a quite a nice colour which looks like the R34's bayside blue, I'd love for mine to be in that colour.
If you have any spare parts that are still in fine order IF it comes to breaking your car, shoot me a message. I'd like to have a few spares to hand so that I'm ready for whenever sod's law hits (and hits hard).
 
Give me a shout too if it comes to it, few things I need for mine mainly Liam's old spoiler ;) I might be the one of the last ph1 1.5 owners now :(
 
The car is still on the road!

Good news:
Got the engine light fault code read and nothing came up, which was very odd. Cleared the light and haven't had a problem since. It's been driven a fair bit since then and there's been nothing noticeable.

Bad news:
The latest problem is the gearbox. Having had some issues towards the end of last year with it being a bit stiff, Ed and I topped up the box's oil at the same time as treating the rust. That seemed to solve it for a while, but since I've stopped running the car regularly, the gear change is stiff again. It's also started to make a gargling sound that changes pitch with the speed of the car.

So yeah, it's still on the world's longest swan song. Essentially I'll just run it into the ground till something fails catastrophically and then break it. Until then, I'm still enjoying it when I can!

Sorry, only just saw this. Used a polyurethane adhesive called tiger seal, available from most good autofactors, or alternatively, the Internet.

On other news, this car *may* be getting a revival or sorts. It's not yet dead.
