Turbo or SR20VE

see heres the thing...

buy a head and do head swap but once you have VVL, you will want more VVL and because you have flat top DE pistons you are limited, so you then have to buy pistons for future upgrades and because the engine is all stripped you might as well refresh it with new bearings etc, then theres the whole external oil feed piss on and as ive already said, the VE block is better than the DE block...

what would you want from the engine dude?

I'd be quite happy with 190 - 200bhp from it.... Can't afford to be spending big money either ya know..

Do it right like wezz says, thats what I'd do if I had the cash.
190odd hp for £1500 is not bad at all.
VVL is arguably more reliable and easier/cheaper to maintain than turbo.
If you dont have mechanical skills at the moment, engine swaps are fairly straightforward but rebuilds are a slippery slope that can end up costing thousands.

well yeh you should get that with an SR16 head as long as its mapped right

you just need to take into consideration that your DE has done 113k miles and slapping a VE head on it and inevitably giving it some big licks could be risky depending on the history of the car

doing something like this shouldnt be done cheap really, thats why i rebuilt mine so its all lovely and fresh :)

What about the drilling the oil line part? drilling the block?
Easy enough tap for oil, full how to on the sr20 sites!

you mean just get a SR16VE?

You want to keep the torque from the 2litre trust me, alot better car to drive.

As the lads are saying easiest way is sr20ve but would be more expensive, i paid €1300 for sr20ve engine delivered.

@VVLwezz who done your tuning?? nice figures

i could afford €1500 No problem... but that would be about it.. i like the fact of the SR20VE because i've never seen one over here before, over here it'd be like one off almera ..... i like :D

dastek did mine boss, it should have more power but they didnt raise the rev limit and it was still making power

How much did you spend on your conversion...? would ya sell it..... :D  lol

Where did you get the SR20VE lad?

VVL head inc manifolds €500
Labour:
Changing head
Tapping for oil feed
Modifying exhaust to suit vvl mani €500 (max)
New Headgasket €100
Dastek mapped and fitted £375(Price from AI autosport in belfast)

Not too sure if dastek can control vvl tho so mayb a controller for that and bobs your uncle!

Can the dastek change speed limit?
What vvl points are you using?
Also is yours a complete sr20ve or just head?

The lads in america say the sr16ve head flows 15% more the sr20ve, thats why he has good results.

Who are them prices with? would the fact my block done 113k miles make any diffeence?

i'm away off this now... txt me reply if possible 0873212569..

i need higher comp pistons in mine, i wish i had the machine shop shave 1mm off the head when i got it skimmed

the head swap isnt that hard to do ...
but like wezz said the ve block is better
and to do it right you will need to upgrade the internals (my next project or just get a 20ve)

Ya im thinking of a rebuild next year maybe! 2.3 or high CR pistons near 13:1 or maybe both!!

I'd like to do a 88mm, N1's, 12:5 C/R, 4-1 and ITB's. 220whp y0. The ol' DE is running damn strong at the mo' but you never know.

I looked into ITB's before and just a dead end!
Crowd in america was on about it but didnt go anywhere, martin brauwer or somethinng like that!

Would love them!

what would 88mm give you? 2.1?
