White Si ALO ALO

Thanks game.

RIGHT. it is the weekend. tomorrow morning will be a oil fest! spark plugs def getting changed. local motor factor has them.

will let you know the results.

my wheels are pretty scabby, will give them a check over. although i'm pretty sure its balancing as when i accelerate over 80 it smoothes out.

and i'm a member now!

argh. everytime i try to leave the car to let the engine cool down so i can change the plugs, I end up having to drive somewhere and thus heating it up again.

One thing to note, it's been driving somewhat better after half a tank of v-power, still half a tank left. Will change plugs in an hour as long as i can leave it alone for a while!

alright. changed the plugs. not much difference at all. very slight improvement, but that could be down to the v-power. the old ones dont look too bad, albeit a bit worn. the old ones are only one firing end, but the new ones have two, does that matter?

i dont think it is a air intake problem, as the car idles fine. it's only when you put ur foot down there is a little bit of acceleration and then a second later a huge surge of power. tbh i think i'll live with it for now. if's not the plugs its going to be something expensive to fix.

it's most noticeable at low speeds, above about 40-50mph it's still there but hardly noticeable. Could need injector cleaner, but i've already tried a general fuel supplement cleaner thing.

bah :(

In an effort to save money, I have a cunning plan.

Can i just take the leads off another car (namely a micra k11) and stick them on mine to test? Or is the setup of a k11 not similar enough? Apologies if that is an incredibly silly suggestion. I'm sitting in the office faaaaaaaar away from cars.

I thought something similar not long ago, i'm not sure if they'd fit. The engines are very similar in size though, it's worth a try!

yasss. that's next then. i'm also going to try some injector cleaner.

The performance does seem to improve a little after a good hard ragging session. But then the next morning it's back to where it was again. I actually had a point yesterday where there was no hesitation, but that was only for about 5 mins when i was flooring it coming onto the motorway. usually it jerks a bit.

I also keep crunching it in third when accelerating hard, i think its me still trying to get used to the new biting point. but everytime i do it, it makes me wretch. done it like three times now. NEVER AGAIN!

I've just chucked half a bottle of Redex in myself lol! I gave it a blast down the M20 and M25 till I got home and it did feel a bit better, but I think it still has the hesitation. I put V-Power in too just to make sure, I'll know by the end of the week when i've gone through another tank of Redex whether it's done anything or not.

I think my car behaves better on v-power, although that might just be a placebo effect.

So you're trying redex, I'll try stp injector cleaner, and we'll see what happens! I was pushing it on country roads and the m25 too, saw a bit of improvement. although my engine is getting bloody noisy on idle, tappets or something i think.

It could be the timing chain - mine's starting to rattle a bit! How many miles has yours done?

Only 57k. But the previous owner did like 5 thousand miles a year on it and I dont think she changed the oil once in 4 years. So it could well be the chain

Ahh, mine has done 117k but it had a full Nissan service up until 94k when I got it in October, but i've changed the oil regularly.

goody two shoes :p Yeah i change my oil every six months. Unfortunately I can't do much about the car's past.

I changed the oil and all filters as soon as i got the car about 3 weeks ago and stuck in some mobil1. What I think i'll do now is drain the oil again and fill it up with fresh oil. That way the sludge that remains will definetly be taken care of or at least diluted even more.

117k is pretty good for your chain to start rattling now!

Yeah it seems although the previous owner drove it a lot (not as much as me) he kept on top of it with Nissan, which must have cost a fortune!

I use Halfords 5/40 fully synth, a lot of people are using this now because it's relatively cheap but good oil (and Halfords did a buy one get one free on it!)

If it's the timing chain, the rattle will be coming from the left side of the engine, under the bulge.

i have the same problem, and its non of the above as i have changed them all. so far its had a 2nd hand throttle body, new HT leads, new plugs, dizzy cap, rotor arm etc, (plus all normal service items) basically everything that has been said here i have changed, im now pretty sure its the o2 sensor but i havent changed it yet, will have to order one soon.

there is no circuit board on the GA engines to solder, i didnt realise this until i came to swap them over but decided to swap it anyway and hope it was a sensor on the throttle body that was knackered, obviously it wasnt.

may aswell change the oil every 3 months imo, costs about £30ish with decent oil which is nothing compared to what you put in in petrol, worth the cash imo.

give it some abuse for a little bit, mines a complete pain sometimes but after a quick blast it improves alot, aslong as the engine is warm with decent oil to the correct level etc it will be fine, the only way to kill and engine is either to be very unlucky or neglectful, the odd trip to the redline isnt a bad thing aslong as its not too often.

Hey guys. Well mines is similar in that it improves after a bit of a blast as you said sprint.

HOWEVER. I put in some redex injector cleaner (couldn't find stp) with about 30 litres in the tank, and didn't notice any difference immediately.

Parked it that night, drove it the next day and noticed a HUGE difference from the start. There's always been hesitation since I bought it, sometimes less sometimes more, but now there are actually times when I can accelerate in 2nd and 3rd without any hesitation at all. (and this is on normal petrol, not v-power anymore)

I hope this is the solution to my problem as I don't want to have to go through the same hassle like you guys have of changing different components. I guess I'll only know after a couple of tankfuls of redex.

Incidentally - sprint is your timing chain noisy like mine and james'?

Edit: I guess you're right about changing oil. I might start changing more regularly, as the oil itself is piss easy. It's the filter that is a complete pain in the arse because of its location. I might stick to changing that every second oil change (ie 6 months).

I'm going to be driving across europe in the almera next month, so fingers crossed! (better check breakdown cover!)
