N16 SR20DE

After sitting down and looking at my finances, im going to have to stay QG oil burner for the rest of the year.

Kingy, as Phil says the engine drinks oil, but im going to try some thicker stuff this time and see if that cures anything. If not, the gearbox, shafts, ECU & NATS parts and gear selectors will all be available so all you'd need is an engine and loom. Ill advertise the parts when the time comes but until then i'll have to carry on smokin'.

How did I miss this whole SR conversion chatter?
I'd love to see someone push the boundries with a QG but, like a few people have already mentioned, it would end up being a big bucks build.
You never know though you may feel differently about it having driven it around for a while whilst you save up for the conversion.

Thing is Spook - if the engine's goosed, it's goosed . . . . But I agree with sticking with the QG to see what is possible in N/A guise (w/out spending stupid amounts of money), we already know it'll hit 200 bhp with ease if it's 'charged.

That's true mate but if you're rebuilding it for big power then I'm sure you'll find the cause of the oil leak and fix it whilst you're there. If it's just a matter of having an engine in and running and then modding it then SR is the way I think. Would have loved to have seen this QG all ported and polished with lightened bits and huge cams just as a middle finger to Nissans Eco engine building really. ;)

Absolutely !

Reet,

Over the last couple of months ive sort of given up on the Almera and I was considering ditching it in favour of something different. (Boosted RWD). But after looking at the options and thinking long and hard about it, ive decided im sticking the 'mera. Mostly due to the ridiculous insurance but partially due to knowing quite a bit about Almera's and being able to fix most things on it (besides the oil burning) with the contents of my garage.

So we're back in the swing of things now and here's my plans for the rest of the year;

1) Brake upgrade
  • Z32 4 Pots and 310mm Discs up front
  • Disc conversion with Primera 278mm discs at the back
  • Braided Lines through-out
  • Replace any brake pipes that are corroded/ing
2) Polybushes
  • Rear Beam
  • Front Wishbones
  • Steering Rack (if these are available for N16s?)
3) Keep feeding it oil

4) Sort out the rust on the rear arches, rear chassis rails, front suspension turret and any other areas that need attention.

Im not going to be doing the bonnet/grille conversion for some time yet. But I do/will have all the bits sat in the garage waiting for when the time comes

Now for the power side of things... (here we go again!) QG or SR? As most know my current QG is a bit tired so im in need of a new engine, but I really dont have any faith in the QG managment to be able to run a 'built' higher compression, bigger cammed motor. I could build one for around £1200 + mapping but on the flip side, I could get 140ish reliable horses in for around £300 and weeks work. I know I made a whole heap of fuss about not going SR and how i was going to prove what the QG can do, but I really dont think it can do anything. I wouldnt be starting the build with hope, which in turn wouldnt give it a very good chance to be successful. So its looking to be SR, although it wont be until next year so for now ill be keeping my smoking QG.

Out.

Is this car going to be stripped out like the last one, or abit more of a refined daily. I would like to see you happy with a SR motor under the hood tbh, you deserve it after the previous balls up.

Besides someone needs to kick ass in the N16 N/A category :stuart:

As much as id like to see the potential of QG motor, you know SR makes sense

good luck

You ever thought about using something like a megasquirt ECU Liam? You could have a go at something special. It won't be the absolute best map it can be but they do seem to be pretty cool.

In all honesty Liam, I can see why you're thinking the way you are - powerwise. The QG was never designed to be tuned to the bollocks, it never had the Gti's intent. I blame that on Nissan, who could have done so much more but decided to go all 'eco' on us. It's just a shame an engine such as that used in the new Juke wasn't available back in 2005 - the 1.6 turbo could have been slotted into the N16 & made a nice 'GT' version.

just chuck in some bigger cams, skimmed head, breathing mods and dastek it! bosh done!!

i wouldnt go any further than that, or put a little turbo setup on it! ;)
at least then as youve allready got the dastek itll only cost you £200 to get it mapped for booooost, :)

If the QG head is anything like GA to release the potential of bolt on mods you will need the head porting and freeing up. SR seems fairly straight forward to swap in plus its far better catered for. Tuning GA/QG is far from cheap

That would have been such a nice idea, what engine is in the Juke could well be an option soon as these start coming off the road etc?
