Stani's SR20 Micra Build

This month progress will be slow with being on call for 14 days of the month. However i still plan to get some things done whice include

Remove the bump at the n/s of the bulkhead to gain approx an inch at the inlet which will also delete many of the holes so less gromets to look at
Get brake pedal, servo and master cylinder fitted
Get clutch pedal, bracket sorted and cable fitted
Swap steering column
Gear linkages **fingers crossed**

Had some signal on callout phone at garage so that led to some things getting done :) earlier on i got the micra clutch cable bracket and the steering column.

First i bolted the micra bracket onto the gearbox, straight fit! But the angle of the bracket is just wrong and would leave the cable at a terrible angle

Micre left, almera right

You can see the difference in thickness for where the rubber section is held, alot thicker on the almera as they seem to have added a plate. (I did remove the plate but the hole was then too big in diameter)

So chop chop, weld weld, paint paint lol

After bolting it up it seemed the gap from where the cable attaches to the bracket and connects to the fork was too much (even with adjustment) so i redrilled the holes and trimmed the bracket by 30mm. Bolted up again and worked ok, just needed adjustment now.

After adjustment somethings went wrong (possibly release bearing detached from fork) the fork itself sits in the correct position but i can push it forward by hand by a fair bit now and the clutch pedal just doesnt work anymore! So will have to push this job to the side until the engine is out to split the gearbox and inspect :(

EDIT: Missing clutch pedal bracket as shown later!

Anyone know what the block thats bolted onto the fork does? Its held on with 1x12mm nut

Also got the improved steering column fitted

Thanks for looking

The block is just a counter/damper weight.

We removed it from Chris's 144 box, had no issues. Other than him being a jerk.

Looks like ill have time on friday night/saturday morning to get the bulkhead cut out and plated up and hopefully sort the clutch issue at the same time. Cant wait to get back to work on it!

Not much to update apart from gear linkages have been removed from donor micra and the bolts for the pedals.

I'm looking to have the 2 linkage bars done and gear selection working next weekend to get another big and free job out the way, just gotta jig something up to get the car a couple foot off the ground and level so it's easier to work with o_O

Also found a roll cage for sale but why are they so far away and appear when I have something else to pay for!!!

We have gears and a clutch! :) both the stabiliser and gear selector bars bolted on, but the gear selector was a little too short so needed lengthened.

Micra left v Almera right

So cut off the micra one near to the end and cut the almera one with plenty (measured that it needs extended 15mm) so bolted upto car and marked up.

How i held the gearstick in the neutral position

Done

Now onto the clutch, turns out theres something missing. Cough cough Mr Bull :P

Had to strip the full dash out the donor car then drill the spotwelds to get this stupid little bracket lol so pedal now secure, clutch cable on but i still dont think its right!

You can see in the pic above ive redrilled another notch in the arm further down. It just doesnt seem to pull the arm back enough. I have a video but i cannot seem to upload :(

Good stuff mate. Is it the bracket that is the problem? Just thinking it may not be in the right place/angle after the cut and shut job. I'd have been tempted to leave the Almera bracket as is and use an Almera cable.

Its maybe looking that way to be honest. Maybe the distance from bracket to arm has to be longer. Because i was alone i couldnt press the clutch and inspect. Micra cable might be bottoming out? Will find out soon enough :)

Front brake pipes are now sorted :) was going to do them myself in copper but it never looks as neat!

Also because i cut the bulkhead out i had a mission reshaping them lol the middle one just wasnt long enough to get right back at the corner but still clears :)

Slowly running out of things to do before money needs to be spent! Have a holiday to pay for end of may so once thats out the way i can have the hubs machined then do the driveshafts :D

Not a great deal to update on but still some progress. Picked up a 1/2" 24v battery gun for the odd job on the car £60

And straight away it was a saviour and saved me plenty hassle! For the first time the car is immobile as ive removed everything upfront. The gun also helped strip the almera hubs which i just cut off for quickness! :) but why am i removing everything? Basically im copying dave bull hubs he had on little bandit!

Next was to get the hubs pressed out but the guy i would use i couldnt get a hold of so a little facebook beg and i pick up this

6 tonne press

Now to figure out how to mount the hubs for pressing, well since im a joiner that didnt take long :P

And now were here

What i need to do is have the almera hub (where the cv bolts into) machined down to press fit into the micra wheel bearing/cast housing. The OD of the hub measures 38mm and the bearing measures 35mm so 3mm to be machined off and some machining to the cv's and i can move onto driveshafts!! :D will have a price on friday

This looks like a great build.

Just about the shafts though, what's the point in swapping to the almera hub? Surely if you are having shafts made anyway you would use the Micra outer CV as almera ones are practically impossible to get now?

Cheers spyke

Yes i could use the micra cv but i would just prefer to use the beefier almera cv. Afterall i plan to multiply the hp by 700% haha! And i really wouldnt like to have to get another set made later if the micra cv's fail, i know daves worked the whole time so its piece of mind

Fair enough. Are you going turbo?

Yeah i will be, just trying to have it running as it would in an almera. Then engine out and prepare that and make up a turbo kit. Garrett gt28 or gt30 is what ill be using. Alot of money to be spent so no time limit as such but summer 2016 is the goal

Give Ross a message, I machined almera hubs to fit the micra knuckles. Absolute perfect fit.

He may still have them from his micra project days
