Your so right Sam, an average run of the mill get em in, get em out, by the hour, insurance repair centre, which is obligated to repair the vehicle to a ‘pre accident condition’ would not clay bar the paint work before mopping. However as you well know a detailer would. i long for paint correction hhmmmm

there is no point using a clay bar to clean the shite off the panit if you're going to mop afterwards, as when you're mopping your cutting a layer of paint off anyway. I'd say the only point in doing it would be if there some serious contamintion of the paintwork and you were worried about scratching the paint whilst trying to mop it off.
 
dont forget claybar comes in several different types like sand paper! ie 40 grit - 3000 grit.

and you only do it to how it needs doing, my pulsar (15 years old)'s needed a good going over with the claybar, but jess N16 (due to where we live) has a few diposites even tho its an 03' reg it could still do with just a light going over, before a good polish and wax : )
 
What other products can be used with the clay bar, as you need the clay polish stuff, could you not use something else that i might already have like auto glym stuff?

And Dave, ever though about getting a light smoke tint on those rear windows? Would make it look sweet imo!
 
no such thing as clay polish, just use autoglym srp after the claying and itl look mint
 
yeah thats extactly wht i use sam, my pulsar came out looking new after i done it : )

dave you need some bronze wheels for your next mod imo ; )
 
SRP has fillers in it which mask the appearance of swirls it has very very very light abrasives in it not enough to really make a difference like a dedicated polish would but the car will always look much better.

you would probably be astounded at the difference after a machine polishing, clarity or the paintwork would be much improved
 
what is SRP?
just wondrig as im guessing its Autoglym Super Resin Polish?

just wonering if your using sme sort of other polish etc : )

also i have a 10" machine polisher (xmas pressy) havent used it yet, will make a big difference yeah ?

yeah Super Resin Polish

orbital polishers are the best for beginners excellent results can be achieved with them, depends on what the polisher is you have, if its the sort you can get in halfords then I have no experience with them but they arent really good at working a polish they are more for buffing than polishing.

Ive got numerous polishes Autoglym, Meguires, Menerza etc

Autoglym's range is limited but fine for most people maintenance wise.

Megs stuff I had was dedicated polish same with the menerza you can get decent results by hand but they come into their own with a machine.

another thing with SRP is you look at the results by hand and you think yeah that is good but its a whole different level when used by machine its messy gets quite powdery but the final product is crazy.

the green car was only ever machine polished once properly with megs 80 then waxed accordingly with collinite but the results from that machine polish are still evident even now as its sat in the garage with the front missing it looks mint, once it was done just following a proper wash technique/process was enough to keep it mint, you dont want to be machining to often as you are removing paint, so do it once and do it right.

Some clays need a special lube to use with them. Bilt Hamber clays only need water. Water is free. Just stick it in any old spray bottle. Bilt Hamber is what I'd recommend. My car is a 53 plate and when I first did it over a year ago I used the normal clay (not the soft) and the amount of deposits that came off was astounding. If you use a good polish and a good wax after then you shouldnt need to clay your car any more than once a year, minimum. I used the soft clay last time round in February this year.
 
A car should only ever need to be clayed every 5 years or so and even then, if it's been given the right treatment, it will only be to small spot areas. A car should not need clayed once a year with a good polish and wax on it.

If you use SRP then remember to stick a Wax / Sealer on top of it or it won't last. It needs something to lock the fillers in, or they will simply wash/come out of the places they are filling.

Claying is required before polishing to achieve the best possible shine, particularly with a compound otherwise you run the risk of simply mopping the contaminants into your paint and causing more harm...
 
Yes Steven, sorry I wasn't very clear when I said once a year minimum. That's the absolute minimum if you don't use a good polish and wax. Like you say use a good wax and you shouldn't need to clay for a good while.
