Autech GTi

THIS:confused:

This was before the clutch change right?

Im presuming you re-used the MT90 again after the clutch change right?

Seems strange to me, so maybe just try some different oil.

Yeah I went with the MT90 because nearly everyone on SR20 forum swears by it in their lsd and non lsd boxes.

Going to try some standard nissan gear oil............ more money :(

Im wondering if I may have a different diff installed.... Ive read on PGA people that have used MT90 with a Mech diff they became incredibly noisey....

the whining gets more high pitched through the gears, its more of like a loose bearing noise rather than a grinding,

see most nissan boxes whine.. my old black one use to do it sounded abit like a dog gearbox.. but it never made agrinding noise.. its so hard to tell without hearing it :(

are the autech boxes deffinatly different to the normal GTi box?

duno you would have felt it when he first got it.. it would be clunky ect at low speeds even with the right oil in it if it were a mechanical diff..

the gearbox has been off at somepoint before Ive had the car, but the clutch I took out was very much standard... so I would of said it hasnt been changed...... I have read a few things about people using mt90 with mechanical diffs and them then clunking.....

How would I be able to tell the difference between the two types of diff?

A mech will skip the wheels when turning at low speed (like in a car park or similar), kinda like welded diffs do. And it's only noticeable at low speed, once over 10mph you won't know the difference to a Viscous other than sheer grip.

the wheels wont skip when turning, that will only happen if the dif is a mechanical 2 way dif, besides the dif will only grip the both driveshafts down when they are under load, ie acceleranting out of a corner, braking, or fast cornering :)

Sammy, i'd check the clutch cable first, could be a chance the new release bearing was slightly wider/beefy and now isn't coming free of clutch. If not then the release bearing might not be on right. Just sounds co-incidental to me. If it wasn't doing it before the clutch change then it's definitely not the gearbox.

Have you checked for play in the wheels, just makes sure its not a bearing. I doubt it though.

All symptoms point towards a different diff so far the quickest and easiest check for me is trying some different oil, as it's only become apparent since changing the oil..... It was fine before

I had noticed some slight clunking at low speed before I did anything to the car

I thought you said you didn't change the oil before the clutch change but a while before the clutch change or am i missing something?

I changed the oil before the clutch change and noticed some noise then. But since the clutch change using the same oil has gotten a lot worse

My fear now if it is a mechanical unit is I've killed the diff bearings as the noise has gotten so bad

Ah i get ya. Yeah i wonder if its too thin for your possibly different diff. I paid about £20 for 5 litres of vzr box oil from a local motor factors, not cheap :(
