my trop green gti

no mate i didn't wanna go phils and him say it wouldn't fit as alot of people were saying it would never fit so wanted to make sure my self and it has loads of room which i was suprised in

Awesome mate!!! I thought there was no way you'd get that thing to squeeze in between the bumper and the rear axle. Can't wait to hear it in action :shades:

Could you do me a favour and measure the length of the back box please, I have an idea on something I wanna do and it would help me out.

so thought i would update this.
basically i fitted my cams weeks ago but was getting no power and the car was bogging till it got to 3k, so the other day decided to have a good look round the motor to see if i could find whats up changing maf lambda sensor and a service and still it was their. i thought i would check the cams as thats the only thing thats been changed and got the neigbour to torque them down as he has done this before for me, well 5 mins later i was swearing like fuck he over torqued them and has snapped 8 of the cam bolts, so im not a happy man.

so now the plan is to try and drill and retap like hally said if this doesn't work im gonna replace the head thanks to nistro now have a spare on its way.
plan for this is for a good head skim to up compression a bit around 0.6 - 0.8 haven't decided yet and some porting also thinking of replacing the tensioner. thoughts did come into my head about sr16 ve pistons but don't think i can afford all that just now.
will post some pics up of the car later today after a good clean

Shit man sorry to hear this, but it goes to show with engine internals a proper torque wrench is worth it's weight in gold. We're pulling thehead off nistro's old car today, we started yesterday but snapped the 10mm Allen key on the 5th head bolt lol

Oh damnn,
Im sorry for you mate !!

Do you know how much torque you need for the bolts?? Or did your neighbour just make a mistake and choose the wrong torque while tightning up the bolts??

Torque wrench ain't needed for cam bolts. You can just feel them when they're tight enough. Maybe that comes with experience?

thank you!!!

now tell joe that, he thinks i'm a right skank for not using it on them cos my torque wrench don't go low enough. You can just feel em nip up tight.

His alternative was to torque em to 22lb ft (the lowest on my wrench) then slacken em a bit  fcukin brummy, stretched bolts anyone :P

right after lots of work this morning i got 6 out of the 13 out but cant get the rest out.
so as you can tell by the other thread im changing the head with a few plans which a few of you know about but should be back on road end of march

what i dont understand is how the fook he snapped 1 and then just carried on regardless over torquing.

oh a 2nd one snapped, oh well

there's a 3rd, ping, meh

4, 5, 6....this is odd theres a pattern

mystifying!!

good luck with new head and plans though mate, be tasty ;)

i would say they don't breake while he wrenched them, but after rich drove his car, so the bolts became warm/hot and the motor vibration make the tension inside the bolts increase and so they brake.
Thats my theory..

yep i'd agree with that, overtorqued so stretched to their limit then thermal expansion and running stresses caused the snapping

Hehe yes that's best expression for my thoughts, my english is not so good.

well heres how the story goes
i hand tighened the cams and went round the block a few times in the motor and had no power till after 3k was just bogging before
3k so i thought i would check a few things to see what was up i adjusted the timing and then revved the engine and the rev's would drop to like 400 and after a while die so changed the maf still the same problems so defo not the maf.
this is when i thought i would get the cams torqued up properly just in case so asked the neighbour to do this while i was doing other stuff once done turned the engine over using the crank and it was knocking so this is when i had a look and saw what had happened.
well nothing i can do now just hope after all the work im gonna put in it works properly and i will remember to never let the neighbour torque any bolts again

damn,
Im also interestedin your experience cause I also wanted to change my intake cam. But there has to be a torque spec for the bolts which you be in the Service manual....
I think im going to buy torque wrench for low torque just to be on the safe side...
Do you thought about changing your Lowport Head with a Highport Head?

yh but need it done asap with out any mapping and im sure the intake sensors are different so would be hard work new head should have good flow once its finished anyways
