Short Shifter

ROFL! Thats film makes up for the "lack-of-effort-picture" How can i say this.....the movie caught the mood of the thread :P top quality

if you cut the shaft, your hand moves less but at a lower height, and requires more force

move the pivot down closer to the linkage pivot, your hand moves less but remains at the same height requiring less force

Dale is right aswell, id trust someone carrying out a turbo conversion and who does all the work by themself

Syms, just because 3 or 4 people on aoc say its wrong doesnt mean it is

the pivot would need to be moved away from the linkage pivot to give less hand movement

I have to say that your are both right. Dale cutting the shaft will make a SMALL difference but the main gain and the reason that these are manufactured is to be had below the pivot point. it's been pointed out so many times on here. I'm even surprise kelv hasn't posted as is he not the knowledgeable one on this. But the manufacturers would have made them with shorter shafts if your point was correct.

Rofl at ryhd, vid was hilarious had me in right stiches.

Dear God, I wouldn't have said anything if I knew this was going to kick off

lmfao at that video Hally

i actually thought this was gonna go on the correct terms at first, then  got a bit dissapointed by the end. sorry to say

- not saying he isnt capable of it - but why would u trust someone - just because they do their own work - (even coming from someone that does my own aswell)
ive seen plenty of cars come in my garage from come and have a go heroes trying to fix/modify/upgrade things, from bodywork to engine, and ended up coming to me to sort.

People having a go them selves at soem stuff is the reasons why ironing boards are still in fasion on rears of corsa's

right DALE - i take it thats ur name. lol

you are correct- to some sense. as you are moving your hand's throw distance less- but this is your hands throw, not the gearlinkage throw.

although u talked of angular and linear etc. its not that, that comes into play.

yes - hand throw is reduced by cutting the shaft
but - and the reason for having a short shift - is that when the lower section "below the pivot point" is extended - this causes the GEAR linkage throw to be reduced.

doing both will reduce the time taken to change gear, but the amount u are able to actually chop the stick down by, i guarentee u will not even realise the time difference because it will be milliseconds, and u wont be able to clutch/shift quick enough to make a difference

shortER shaft = less hand movement
short shiftER = less linkage movement

------------

On another note i can actually believe i went out to strip a car this morning - came in this afternoon for lunch and checked the site - only to come back tonight and the thread has added 3-4 pages to it :O

lol

interesting battles. possibly taken a bit tooo serious though

i think you should each picka lady of your choice and let them mud fight to see who ends up dirt champion! :D

QD

I think thats actually where this thread got confusing, Im pretty sure when dale says throw - he means the actaul movement your hand makes, not (im assuming there is a technical term for throw - when talking gear shifters) which is causing the argument.

What everyones saying it cutting it down wont change the amount the shaft moves AT THE BASE, where as dale is saying it will change the amount it moves AT THE GEAR KNOB END.

Maybe that make more sense?

Also i agree on AOC statements are never gospel, Loads of forum myths have come and gone in the short time i've been here, all n15's having holes for a rear strut brace for example. (which they dont)

i got the best of both worlds when i made my short shifter, because i slid the pivot point up the shaft, it also reduced the shaft length without chopping yey! lol

The point i was trying to make is that from the majority of Dale's posts, he appears to know his stuff.

thats what i meant, cheers. the closer your hand is to the pivot, the less movement your hand has to make
