Sr20de cam install tips/help

Thats almost the same way i did it simcard,in that order too !!!

So i have reset the timing AGAIN,but as i turn the motor over by hand, the chain will just skip a tooth or 2 on the exhaust sprocket so easy, why is this happening ??,the tensioner is release with hook off and it popped out like it should, but little pressure on the chain,i understand that its oil pressure that makes it pressure the chain, but how can i get it pressurize if the chain if slipping on the sprockets, when just hand cranking, think what would happen if i even attemp to start it with the key Lol

You've done something wrong. Simple as that. There's not enough slack in the world that could cause it to skip teeth on hand cranking alone if the tensioner was fully out. Try knocking the hook off the tensioner before turning it over. It doesn't need oil pressure to come out, it needs it to maintain it when the car is running.

Try turning the engine by using the cam sprocket bolts rather than the crank. This may put more pressure on the sprockets and make it more difficult to slip.
...or / and turn the engine with the spark plugs removed so you dont have to fight against compression. These simple steps should see zero slippage.

This is with all plugs already out,but i try turning it by the sprockets but tbh,i would be amazed if it stop the chain slipping, but what do i know lol

Thanks anyway Rowdy,FWIW when i turn the crank slightly i can take the slack up,but as soon i go to turn it over more it goes so slack and just jumps on the exhaust sprocket, you can hear it jump !

Just been thinking some more lol, that when i first posted about the engine not starting, when i hand cranked it before to check timing, many times,it did not slip on the sprockets then,so i cant understand why it is now LOL,i have done nothing apart from try the old and new and old tensioner again, both pop out but got the slack this time.

guess I have figured what you are doing wrong.

you have marked the chain and the pulleys, you then rotate the engine and the two marks arent lined up.

They wont be they move with every rotation.

Are you counting the links everytime or are you simply relying on marks you have made?

does the car have fuel in it.

Somebody is having a look at it tomorrow,i report back,i guess that was a jibe ?

FWIW,i have done ALL the work on my p11 in the 4 plus years i have owned it,if you look at my car on NPOC,there is a shit load of work and money been put into it,yep i must of fooked up the cam installed, timing marks are correct, but got slack so beats me, i have done flywheel etc just a month ago myself, water pump, all front and rear susphension renewed/poly bushed etc, poly engine mounts, you name i have done it on the primera all on a driveway by myself,so it not like i dont know what i am doing ie a novice LOL,i took my time,i asked on AOC for cam info before starting and sr20forum etc,as i had never done a cam install before. So dont put me down for trying !!!

I be glad when the car is up and running again, this is a forum after all !

Got fuel,Marks are correct,i set it everytime after the chain has skipped, but when going to hand crank the engine over, the chain is so easy to skip teeth on the exhaust cam sprocket.

it just doesnt make sense what you are saying, there is no way the chain will just 'skip'

get a video of what you are doing

Around 6 to 10 for cam caps and around 120 for the sprockets, cant remember without looking at the haynes book again.
